Background: I first contracted Lyme disease 12 years ago in Mpls, MN--right before I moved back to Traverse City, MI. There Mary Clifton served as my primary care physician for the 5 years from early 2009-2014. (We both knew that chronic Lyme disease was a particular]ly challenging condition, requiring special expertise--so we would check in about it at each successive 6 month interval, but her primary focus was on tracking other key markers in my overall health.) These included high blood pressure, cholesterol, pre-diabetes and depression. Mary's suggestion was to dramatically modify my lifestyle by limiting consumption of animal protein, sugars and other refined carbohydrates and unhealthy oils. To stick to the vegan protocol Dr. Clifton recommended was challenging, as was continuing to exercise heavily each day---especially based on the chronic pain that accompanies Lyme disease. However, a most valuable contribution to my healing was her recognition that her role should be to… focus on everything BUT my Lyme disease---and this was quite an undertaking, because I was a pretty anxious, unruly and headstrong patient, deep in the throes of chronic pain. In retrospect, I realize that in this sense she acted as a consummate professional: identifying the best ways in which she could help me until my health began to return and I was able to gain some traction in overcoming my chronic pain and the resulting limits to my life. The highest compliment coming from a Lyme disease patient to a primary care physician is to simply observe that they listened and sought ways to provide comfort--Dr. Clifton did both. I have great admiration for Dr. Clifton, in particular for her courage in advancing proper nutrition and physical movement as key catalysts toward promoting better health outcomes for her patients. It is through this combined program that I eventually reduced my weight by 50 lbs. (and never did need treatment for diabetes). I am now monitoring my blood pressure with my new doctor in the hope that I may no longer need treatment for hypertension. I run four miles a day and do resistance training. In fact, I am in better health today than I have ever been in my entire adult life, and this as I approach my 66th birthday. Finally, I am both proud and relieved to report that after a dozen years I am now completely asymptomatic for Lyme disease--and Mary Clifton played a key role in this life renaissance.

It's rare these days to have a doctor actually spend time with you and not just push the lastest medications. Dr. Clifton has the ability to identify the core issue and give you the easiest solution, which is often simple and inexpensive. Cannot recommend enough!
