Summary
What inspires Mary Helen every day? Being a caregiver and making a difference in the lives of others. She knew in high school that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine and says, "As the oldest of six, I have always taken care of my siblings, and medicine allows me to continue doing that for others."
Of her chosen specialty, Mary Helen explains, "My first position as a nursing student was on a cardiology unit. I was immediately impressed with the role the heart plays in our health and body, so Cardiology seemed like a natural progression." She chose Beacon Health System because of its cutting-edge technology, encouragement and support for ongoing education and the way they empower nurses. For herself and her patients, Mary Helen strongly believes that "you can never stop learning."
As a family nurse practitioner at BMG Cardiovascular Specialists, Mary Helen evaluates and diagnoses patients, prescribes medication and provides education to help them better understand and take an …active role in caring for their own health and well-being. "I want my patients to know that I am their advocate."
In her own words…
Who is or was the most influential person/role model in your life? My mom. She has always been my biggest supporter, providing encouragement, love and support.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember most about it? I was a gift wrapper over the holidays for a local drugstore. I remember the delight on people’s faces when they would leave with a gift ready to give that looked beautiful.
What is your favorite food? I love Chinese food. My favorite movies are True Lies and Independence Day.
What were your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My best subjects were English and science. Math was my worst.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased), who would it be and why? Florence Nightingale, to learn about the history of nursing.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I’m passionate about fly fishing – I have built my own rod and tie my own flies. I also enjoy cross stitch and reading.
