Dr. Mary Margaret Oneill, MD

I have never reviewed someone online previously, but my experience with this doctor several years ago gave me so much anxiety that I still feel the indignity when I think about the experience. I tried Dr. O'Neal after a recommendation from my primary physician. I checked out the address beforehand and found it to be in a little dilapidated house, rather than an office building, which I thought was odd but it didn't throw me off. Neither did the fact that she supposedly might have several large dogs in the waiting room at any given time. Also, a bit odd, but I'm an animal lover, so it might be kind of nice. Anyway, I had my annual exam and during it I asked a question that was somewhat embarrassing for me to ask, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. She answered curtly and disdainfully that no such symptom existed and actually repeated my words under her breath and laughed to herself. I was too embarrassed to pursue it. I didn't respond and just ignored her rudeness and… left....never to return again! For someone in the medical profession to be so unprofessional about a patient's concerns, especially in such a personal field as gynecology, is beyond shameful! Because she shamed me by disregarding my question and treating me with such rudeness, it took years for me to bring it up again with another gynecologist who's bedside manner is the polar opposite of Dr. O'Neill's. I had my question answered in a professional, logical manner and I was treated for the "non-existent" condition, which is totally ordinary as it turns out.

Dr. O'Neil is extremely knowledgable, professional and highly regarded by her peers. My favorite Ob/Gyn.

NOBODY deserves to be treated the way Dr. O'Neill treats her patients, and I'm surprised that she is still allowed to practice medicine. I really cannot speak to Dr. O'Neill's medical expertise because he's such a repugnant robot of a human being. I guess she has not lost her license because there's no law against being an antisocial misfit. I wonder if she has Aspergers Syndrome or some other high-functioning autism, because she cannot relate to people at all (on each of the three occasions that I attempted to give her the benefit of the doubt by seeing her, she NOT ONCE looked me in the eye). The ONLY time she perks up and acts remotely normal is when she brings one of her giant, slobbering dogs to the office -- and how is THAT not against health regulations?

I will give the office 4 stars because they respond fast to fitting you in a tight schedule; however, I would like to give Dr O'Neill 1 stars only because of the experiences that I have had with her. Let me start off by saying that my partner and I have been going to this office for the past 3 years, and during that time I have had a lot of unfortunate experiences. I came to the good Dr's office with problems of uterine fibroid's and cyst; ever since I walked in the door the Dr was already convincing me that I will not be able to conceive because of my blocked tubes and that opening my tubes was a waste of time (I know so encouraging). I almost bought into all of that and her unpleasant delivery as well only to go to another MD and I had the surgery. I was able to conceive shortly afterwards. I am sad to say that it was a chemical pregnancy but I proved the good doctor too be wrong. I recently got pregnant and carried for 9 weeks only to find out that the fetus died at 7… weeks. It broke me and my partners heart so much and now that day is filled by a black hole. Because the good Dr and her cold response to our loss it has become one of the worst experiences that I have ever had in my entire life. The only thing that made it pleasant was the midwife Kavita; in fact, I usually see Kavita over the Dr. for the positive energy that she gives despite however horrible the situation may be. When she called the Dr in the room to confirm the dead fetus I thought it could't be that bad because I was sure that the Dr. would exhibit some sort of emotions.............I think that I gave her too much credit. Sure my review is subjective because it is totally based off of my experiences, and I am sure that the good Dr is an excellent OBGYN to some. But all that I know is that my partner and I are looking for a new OBGYN preferably one with some bed side manners and some darn compassion. I pray that the next time that I conceive it will be the real deal and I will be able to carry to full term, but if something does happen again (god forbid) I want to know that the Dr that I am supposed to have a safe and comfortable relationship with exist and is there for me at that moment and not just saying "I don't know what to tell you." Just know that I had to wait a week to write this review because I didn't want to do it with an angry tone. I do not know if Dr O'neill has any hangups (homophobia) or maybe she's not comfortable treating patients like me (African American) but that energy she emits is definitely picked up on and has been intensely felt since my partner and I have been seeing her. It is sad that it took this incident to finally push us away. I will miss Kavita (I am glad that she was there to make the experience less painful for us and she gave us some hope) and the other friendly staff but not the good Dr.Be well and please choose the right OBGYN for you do not settle.

I'm stunned as I've read the other reviews here... both my younger daughter and I have both been patients of Dr. O'Neill, and I'm feeling compelled to write a review in her defense. I'm particularly stumped by the reviewer who stated that Dr. O'Neill didn't perform hysterectomies, as this is one of the procedures I had done by her at O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, and she was beyond wonderful. I had been going to a doctor at Kaiser who evidently was in it just for the money.. I'd been bleeding heavily - an awful period about every 13 to 20 days - and the gynecologist at Kaiser did three D&Cs and a uterine ablation, and four months after the ablation, I was bleeding again. Fortunately, I had dual insurance, and went to Dr. O'Neill. Turned out not only did I have a condition called adenomyosis, but that Kaiser had diagnosed me with that as well. They just didn't tell me, nor did they mention that with this condition, the bleeding never would have stopped. The only "cure" was a… hysterectomy, which Dr. O'Neill did. Yes, she's brusk. NO, she's NOT unknowledgeable! This woman, FYI, is SO intelligent that she's been to the Himalayas more than once, to teach Himalayan midwives their trade. She's a bit quirky, but once you stop thinking that your doctor should be one way or another, and just accept that she's a very quiet person, you'll see that this is just her way. Many male doctors have her demeanor, but they're not criticized for it. Anyway, I digress... She also found a suspicious lump in my breast and referred me to an amazing surgeon. My daughter's last two sons were delivered by none other than Dr. O'Neill herself... she liked her so much that she didn't even consider having one of the midwives deliver them. I think it's worthwhile to check this doctor out for yourself, and don't necessarily go by bad reviews. Everyone has a different experience, and ours was without question, the very best!
