His dental training included obtaining his doctorate of dental surgery (DDS) degree at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He then went on to complete two additional years of specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Pyfferoen's pediatric dental clinic opened in Ames in September 2010. He sees patients from infancy up to age 18, including children with special healthcare needs.
