Dr. Matthew Evan Alter, MD

I'd give it a 0 if I could - Dr. Alter is the most condescending, rude, egotistical doctor I've ever come across. The rest of the facility and staff seem great but this doctor ruined the entire experience and if a doctor like him is allowed to work there I cannot recommend them. Everyone else was nice and professional but I've never left an appointment feeling more attacked and demeaned and disrespected. First he didn't introduce himself when he entered the room and became huffy and acted impatient upon reviewing my chart. He was snappy when asking questions and none of my responses seemed sufficient to him. That's definitely not going to put anyone at ease. Then he has the gall to say that I'm seeming very anxious and fidgety. Well of course I am. I'm tired after very little sleep because I was super excited about my pre-op, had a good bit of caffeine in my system so I was awake to make the almost 2 hour drive to see this doctor, I'm sitting there half naked in skippy underwear the… office provided and hospital gown, and I'm feeling attacked because I have to take medications for sleep, anxiety, and ADHD. Yes, there's a good chance I might be a tad nervous and - god forbid - fidgety. So when I try to call him out for his antagonist - and rather abrasive - attitude towards me he yells "I'm ABRASIVE?!" Yes doc, I spoke clearly. Then you accuse me of calling him abrasive because he doesn't think I can tolerate the procedure. Not even close dude. I am thankful that a doctor tells me that they don't think I can tolerate an awake procedure. I appreciate that. I don't appreciate being made to feel like something is wrong with me and attacked. There's no reason to be a jerk. I have never been made to feel so low about myself in my adult life. This man does not need to treat patients and for the sake of the practice, Sono Bello needs to get rid of him. Unfortunately I know nothing will come of it and his ego will continue to be stroked. Go somewhere else or at least make sure that you do not have Dr. Alter.

No bedside manner, does not listen to patient, does not give a thorough review of issues. NOT the Dr you want when you're in need of solutions to improve your health.

This man saved my life. I had an emergency procedure and Dr. Alter was the person on call. He made a diagnosis that nobody else had made, and if it was not for his diagnosis I would not be here today to type this. I hope Dr. Alter is still around Richmond and reads this because I am forever grateful.

Dr Alter operated on me after being diagnosed with an inflamed appendix in the E.R. at St Francis Bon Secours.During the operation he also noticed a cyst on the tail of my pancreas.After meeting with Dr Alter to discuss this problem an the procedure that was required I felt more than confident that he was the doctor that could help me. Dr Alter took away any fears that I may have had for this operation.He exuded such confidence that I was put at ease ,his calm demeanor and assurance that he would do the utmost too help me through this difficult time was just what I needed. He told me from the get go that this operation was very big and it would be painful. After the operation which he removed one third of my pancreas and my entire spleen he was there each day making sure that my pain was well managed and that I was as comfortable as possible. The operation went just as he had explained and I was out of the hospital and home after six days. I was more than fortunate to have met Dr… Alter and am very thankful that this wonderful surgeon came into my life at a this critical time .

Doctor Alter is wonderful. The first doctors I had, if I would have stayed with them I would not be writing this now. He saved my life and if I have problems in the future he is the only doctor that I will have operate on me.

Patient, professional and very effective

Dr. Alter is a wonderful surgeon. He was my surgeon of choice when I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer 13 years ago. I credit Dr. Alter for saving my life. At the age of 42, I was considered young to have colon cancer. His bedside manner is outstanding. He is a caring physician and an expert in his field. I have recommended him to family and friends.

I'll return to Dr. Alter for any future surgical needs. Thus far, he has performed a lap choley, breast lumpectomy, and port-a-cath placement for me. Dr. Alter has been wonderful.

Dr Alter helped me to decide on the right course of surgery to repair a long standing hiatal hernia. He was attentive and confident. His explanations of options were appropriate for understanding without being too technical. His office scheduled my appointments quickly, I was seen promptly upon arrival each time. I would happily recommend him.
