Dr. Matthew Joseph Bak, MD

Maybe he has a decent bedside manner for men, but to me he came across as arrogant and unbothered by my concerns. I was surprised because he came highly recommended by at least four other doctors I know. He's pawned me off on another doctor-which might not even be covered by my insurance. If you're military and need surgical services- wait til you PCS, or just get on the wait list on post, they'll treat you better.

My husband was extremely lucky to have been referred to Dr Bak. He is a skilled surgeon. Every nurse we encountered at NorGen let us know that Dr Bak was the best and he is. He cares about his patients - he called twice on a Sunday to give test results - and explains procedures in detail. He also has a personality, not a dry bedside manner. His assistant, Resha, is excellent as well.

Dr. Bak is an impressive individual on many levels. He is clearly one of the most talented MDs I have encountered in 75 years. He has superb interpersonal skills and is easy to talk to and willing to address any question or concern. I completed a scheduled appointment 20 May 2019 to determine the need for the surgical removal of my thyroid and an associated large goiter. He patiently listened to my thoughts and reviewed all historical medical information I provided. He brought me up to speed relative to the state of thyroid medical evaluations and procedures and discussed all potential medical solutions pertinent to my situation and the associated consequences of each. Realizing my concerns, he opted to immediately undertake an unscheduled ultrasound and fine needle biopsy to determine the facts at the earliest possible date and use the results to establish a prognosis and way ahead. You can bet that if further intervention is required I will rely on Dr. Bak's expertise, knowledge,… and skill to see it through to the highest possibility of success. My medical experience left me with some apprehensions about dealing with another surgeon but Dr. Bak far exceeded my expectations. If you are in need of a thyroid evaluation or possible surgery Dr. Matthew Bak, Sentara Norfolk / EVMS, would be a great start point.

I recently had a deep lobe tumor removed via Parotidectomy surgery. Dr. Bak and his staff were professional, caring and attentive.

Tumor board recommended radiation, but Dr. Bak said he was confident I didn't need it and that he had been aggressive enough to not worry. He did not get it all and it did recur resulting in major surgery and reconstruction of my face.

Great bedside manner, kind, caring and very easy to talk to.

I went with my spouse to see Dr Bak. He is a kind, caring doctor who explained all the procedures with words the average patient could understand. He answered all questions with patience and sincerity. Love him!

My son had a neck cyst that turned out to be cancer and Dr. Bak carefully explained all the steps in his recovery. He has a great bedside manner and was very reassuring to us. I felt comfort in knowing he was taking care of my son. It's a long road to recovery but feel blessed we found Dr. Bak, I highly recommend him.

Dr. Bak was very patient and professional before and after my cancer surgery. He took the time to reassure me following the surgery when I was scared and even a little paranoid about my prognosis. I would recommend him highly.
