Dr. Matthew Garret Blum, MD

Dr. Blum, a Colorado Springs native, is a general thoracic surgeon specializing in the treatment of lung cancer, esophageal disease and cancer, and other types of chest specific tumors. He is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed his general surgical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital and his general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his thoracic surgery training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. For the eight years prior to coming to Penrose Cardiothoracic Surgery,he was the section head of general thoracic surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He has authored numerous publications and textbook chapters, and served on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guideline committees for the treatment of non small cell and small cell lung cancers. He brings advanced minimally invasive thoracic surgery to southern Colorado, using Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS), which …can result in shorter recovery times. He is a member of the Penrose Cancer Center's thoracic/oncology multidisciplinary team, working closely with other specialists to determine the best treatment strategy for each patient. Dr. Blum is board certified in General Surgery and Thoracic Surgery, and is the only dedicated general thoracic surgeon in southern Colorado.
