Dr. Matthew Michael Merz, MD

After finally being able to talk about my symptoms, since he wouldn’t let me talk, he belittled me and talked down to me. He told me I was too young to have hip/back issues and PT was the only option. His diagnosis was bursitis of the hip even though I was having severe nerve pain down my right leg. After requesting MRIs, he said no. I went to PT for two weeks and started limping. The next day he gave me a cortisone shot in my hip that did absolutely nothing. I never went back, and switched doctors. After 2 MRIs, they found I have a bulging disc that is applying pressure to my sciatic nerve. If he would’ve just did the MRIs, he would have found it was a back issue, and that the correct PT could have prevented me from getting two epidurals. I don’t recommend him since he discriminated me for my age and weight. He said that I have a weak core and that If I worked out more then it wouldn’t be that inflamed. It’s hard to work out when you have nerve pain shooting down your entire leg. Plus… going from working out 6 days a week to 0, is a serious red flag to any doctor.

I visited Dr Merz for the first time in 2017. I chose this facility since I had neck surgery with this group several years earlier. I visited an old location near West Chester Hospital. I overheard his receptionist tell another patient that he was running behind. No one informed me. I decided to wait since I was in a lot of pain and needed advice. I waited almost an hour. Dr Merz did greet me when he entered the room which was great. But he never examined me or asked how I was feeling or what I expected from this visit. He looked at my records and said "you have been in pain for such a long time, there is nothing I can do for you". I did not want pain meds or surgery. He then began a long presentation of spinal issues using his own body as a model. The session was ending, so I squeezed in that my shoulders were very painful. He offered shoulder xrays that later revealed a moderate issue. I also asked about a tens unit. He had his assistant check with my insurance. I later purchased… one on my own more reasonably. I declined steroid injections for the shoulder issue as I like natural remedies. I have since found relief from an OTC supplement recommended by a friend. This visit was a waste of my time and money.
