After playing football for the University of Texas Longhorns and training under world-renowned Dr. James Andrews, Dr. Matthew C. Murray is a true expert in orthopaedic sports medicine. Additionally, Dr. Murray is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and subspecialty certified in Sports Medicine.
Dr. Murray specializes in surgery of athletic injuries of the upper and lower extremity. He performs hundreds of routine arthroscopic procedures annually, including meniscus surgery, ACL reconstructions, labral repairs, rotator cuff repairs, and hip labral repairs. After spending four years as an assistant clinical professor at UT Health Science Center, Dr. Murray is also very experienced taking care of complex athletic knee and shoulder injuries, and he is referred patients from all over Texas for his expertise in these problems. Working directly with Dr. James Andrews, Dr. Murray completed his fellowship training for surgical sports injuries at The American Sports Medicine …Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. There he cared for numerous NFL, NCAA, NBA, and MLB athletes and provided direct sports coverage for Jacksonville State University, The University of Alabama, the Birmingham Barons, and the Washington Commanders.
Currently Dr. Murray is the team surgeon for the University of the Incarnate Word and Our Lady of the Lake University athletics teams. Any given Friday during football season, you can also find Dr. Murray on the sidelines of several local area high schools. He also runs a Saturday sports clinic that is open to all athletes throughout the school year. In recognition of his dedication to athletes, Dr. Murray was selected a Healthcare Hero by the San Antonio Business Journal in 2016. He was also selected as a Top Orthopedic Surgeon in San Antonio in 2020 and 2021.

Dr. Murray completed orthopaedic surgery residency training and obtained his medical degree from UT Health Science Center San Antonio, where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. As an undergraduate at the University of Texas at Austin, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was a letterman on the Texas Longhorn football team, winning Big XII Conference All-Academic First Team honors.
A native South Texan born and raised in McAllen, Dr. Murray graduated magna cum laude from Memorial High School. After injuring his own knee, an ACL surgery his junior year sparked his interest in orthopaedic sports medicine. After all this, he still earned district MVP and all-state football honors as a senior linebacker.
