Dr. Matthew John Neltner, MD

He is a big liar and I would definitely not recommend him!

Dr. Neltner has set my standard of what it should feel like to consult a professional in mental health. There was nothing that I felt couldn't be said. The conversations during my appointments were the easiest and most helpful that I have experienced. He answered any questions that I had and provided a logical, impersonal perspective that really helped me accept my diagnosis and myself. In my opinion, he is a credit to his profession.

If you can get over the fact that he's a little quirky and almost seemingly narcoleptic, he's really very intelligent. I wish he had been a little more direct about what he wanted me to do in terms of seeking treatment. I think he was just wanting me to be comfortable by not pushing certain kinds of treatment over others, but I wish he had given me a little more a push in one direction or another because I had no idea what I needed to do to improve. Eventually we went the medication route, and once that was decided on he was very helpful in terms of what kind of medicine I needed, dosage, etc. As with any other doctor, you need to give it a few appointments. I did eventually seek another doctor for therapy reasons because he wasn't necessarily my favorite person to talk to, but that's just a matter of preference. In terms of professionalism I give him four stars. In terms of personality, he was maybe slightly lacking, but that's neither here nor there. He is very intelligent and I… would recommend him to anybody.

Kind, courteous and patient. He paid attention to more than just my medical history, taking an interest in me as a person. Also allowed me to open up at my own pace. Did not pressure me when I said I was nervous about medication, but rather told me his suggestions and said he hated to see me leave without anything to help. Eager to discuss a variety of options for self-care and finding what worked for me. A little absent-minded, but intelligent and compassionate.

Fell asleep during the appointment. Twice. Accused me of drug-seeking medications that I told him were potentially lethal for me to take. Had no idea what was on my chart. Recommended seriously dangerous herbal supplements contraindicated for my medication. Told me prescription drugs were much less safe than herbal medicines (!). Borderline incompetent.
