Dr. Matthew Wayne Nicola, MD

I have been a patient of Dr Nicola and PA Martinez for over 10 years. They have guided me to a healthier life. I truly appreciate all his staff especially The Receptionist Ms Y who is caring and helpful.

Been a patient of Dr. Nicola for 2 years. He figured out on 1st visit what 4 other Doctors could not diagnose in 2 months. Whenever I need to get in quickly, they get a PS to see me that day. The front office is courteous, caring and fun

If you're a Veteran that served your country, don't bother coming here. I am a Disabled Veteran, who has had their fair share of bad experiences with VA Docs, and I have never in my life been treated as poorly as I was treated at Smithson Valley Family Medicine. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone...EVER. I told the PA (not even a doctor) the reason for my visit, and he immediately began to argue with me - very unprofessional. The sad part is, that the PA I saw is a Veteran himself. Just to clarify, the rest of the staff was very kind and professional however.

He was right on top what my main concern was. I had to find a new doctor because of ACD. I was one of the lucky ones to fins a doctor that understood me and just did not assume because of my age. BTW: He is a Navy man.

Dr. Nicola seemed nice enough and competent; however, his front office staff are horrible. They humiliated me in front of the entire lobby and other staffers. Dr. Nicola never responded to the complaint I filed with his office regarding his staff, so that is inexcusable. Immediately switched PCPs because of his staff.

Dr Nicola was the most arrogant, rude, careless, coldest person who believes he is God's greatest gift to the world and that he knows everything, everyone else is below him he was so rude to my grandmother that he made her cry in her appointment. SICKENING! . NO JOKE people I would NOT recommend my worse enemy to go to this So call DR. Last but not least his staff ( other than ladies at front desk) are impossible to reach once u leave the office, and if u r lucky to get them on the phone then be careful because they are rude in a way that I can't explain. Aggressive and take low stabs at you. IT'S THE MOST UNPROFESSIONAL PLACE, NO WAY I WILL EVER GO HER AGAIN, I RECOMMEND YOU DONT EITHER. If they can be so rude to an elderly lady ( my grandmother) enough to make her cry. Who knows what they will do to others!

My first visit to Matthew Nicola when he started his practice in the "hinterlands" of Comal County. I needed a physician for everyday issues. He was in a double wide manufactured "used" office. Clearly, he was not trying to impress anyone with his appreciation of the finer things. He is clearly a young physician focused on patient care. He listens, he is intent, and does not mince words! He is the genuine deal. I checked his record at the Texas State Dept of a Licenses for reprimands! There were none! I looked at his education. He taught for awhile in a school of nursing. That piece of information meant a great deal to a former nurse. I interviewed him. I was surprised and pleased! I am impressed that we have a physician of his caliber here in the "backwoods"! I cannot let him have a 2 something rating! He is far too good for that evaluation! The only problem is with just one encounter I have had with one person, who clearly would not give an urgent… appointment. I had that person figured as not lasting long. But for the most part, his staff is being trained to observe, listen to, and route patients to an appropriate appointment! Generally---but you know---one bad apple stays with you---I call these type office workers, "the Gestapo"--you are not getting in unless you mention blood! Dr. Matthew Nicola has my vote!

Staff very professional, but Dr.Nicola dismissed my frozen shoulder as "not possible for a 46 year old " and told me to stop physical therapy because it should have helped after 12 visits. Basically made me feel as if there was something wrong with me mentally, not physically. Followed up with orthopedic surgeon who confirmed frozen shoulder and said to definitely continue physical therapy, and gave me injections for terrible pain I was having. Would not recommend Dr. Nicola to anyone.

I have being seeing Dr. Nicola for over 7 years. Although we moved to SA 3 years ago, I still drive to Spring Branch because of the quality care coupled with genuine compassion. Dr. Nicola always spends the appropriate amount of time with me and if something occurs out of their control like an office emergency for another patient, Dr. Nicola always lets me know so I am not wondering about a delay.

There is everything to like and little to dislike about healthcare experiences with Dr Nicola. He gets the outcome the patient is looking for (if the patient is compliant.) His chairside manner is warm, engaging and sincere. I've read a couple of reviews about a staff issue here or there. Unfortunately that is virtually unavoidable. I haven't had any negative experiences in that regard. A bit of my career was in the evaluation of health care experiences. Many people confuse quality medical care with liking the doctor or the staff rather than whether the therapy was correct and worked. With Dr Nicola, it's about having the desirable outcome.
