Dr. Matthew Thomas Sims

I am the daughter of an 87-year-old patient who was recently seen in the ER for COVID. Our family was already under a great deal of stress and concern about her health. One of my brothers, who works in the medical field, asked the nurse if we could speak with the doctor so we could better understand our mother’s condition. When Dr. Sims entered the room, his first words were, “Is there a problem?” The tone felt unnecessarily defensive and dismissive. My brother calmly responded that he had simply asked a question and that there was no need for a hateful or disrespectful tone. We understand that emergency room physicians work in an extremely demanding environment, and we appreciate the pressure they are under while caring for patients. However, families who are scared and worried about their loved one deserve to be met with professionalism, patience, and compassion. This review is not about expecting special treatment or questioning medical decisions. It is about the importance of… respectful communication and kindness during a frightening and vulnerable time for a family. A few moments of compassion can make a significant difference.
