Dr. Matthew Sorensen, DPM, is a dedicated foot and ankle podiatric surgeon who serves as a provider at OrthoIllinois, a division of OrthoMidwest. His patient care philosophy is rooted in compassion and a commitment to engaging with the emotional, mental, and physical states of his patients at the time they seek care. Dr. Sorensen recognizes that each patient is more than their foot or ankle problem; they have unique lives and lifestyles that may be impeded by injury or condition. He believes that understanding a patient’s background and recovery goals is essential to ensuring that patients feel heard and remain active participants in their treatment plans.
Dr. Sorensen’s interest in medicine was inspired by his grandfather and uncle, both dentists, whose practices provided early exposure to healthcare. His passion for foot and ankle medicine was solidified after experiencing a significant ankle injury as a high school sophomore in Wisconsin, which sidelined him from his team’s state …hockey championship. This personal experience gave him firsthand insight into the impact of physical injury and the importance of the physician-patient relationship. During his collegiate hockey career, Dr. Sorensen had further opportunities to interact with team physicians and surgeons, which confirmed his vocational interest in helping individuals—especially athletes—overcome acute injuries and other conditions that affect their daily lives.
As a surgeon, Dr. Sorensen finds fulfillment in solving problems and helping patients regain mobility, drawing upon his natural aptitude for working with his hands. He emphasizes the critical importance of lower extremity health, knowing that people rely on their feet and ankles with every step they take. His specialty allows him to support patients in maintaining or restoring their desired quality of life and activity levels.
In his practice, Dr. Sorensen treats a wide range of traumatic injuries as well as congenital and degenerative conditions of the foot and ankle. He has a particular interest in sports injuries, trauma, and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Sorensen prioritizes state-of-the-art conservative and non-surgical treatment methods as his first approach, engaging patients in discussions about surgical care only when conservative interventions have been exhausted. Throughout the treatment process, whether conservative or surgical, he ensures that patients fully understand their condition and treatment recommendations, empowering them to remain actively involved in their treatment journey and recovery.
Dr. Sorensen is committed to helping patients successfully return to the quality of life and activities they desire.
Dr. Sorenson was very professional and courteous and explained all my options. He listened to tentatively and gave me other possibilities for treatment if they became necessary. The only negative I have was that my appointment was for 930 and I didn’t get to see the doctor until 1040.
