Told Asking for Stability Was “Defensive” I had an extremely upsetting experience with this provider. In roughly 60 days, I had been prescribed or transitioned through six medications. I was not refusing treatment; I was asking for stability long enough to understand what was helping, causing side effects, and what my baseline was. Instead, I repeatedly felt talked over and was called “defensive” for expressing those concerns. When asked whether my symptoms were improving, I answered as clearly as I could, yet she kept saying she needed “more understanding” after I explained I had given all the explanation I had. I finally stopped her and asked, “Would you agree this is not a functioning professional relationship?” She agreed, yet continued for about 15 more minutes. I left so distressed I cried for two days and ended care. With the current Lindsay Clancy trial raising questions about psychiatric medication management, I find this especially concerning. Patients must be heard when… they say treatment does not feel right.
