Dr. Mehdi Shahab Ferdows, MD

I wouldn't trust my Ulcerative Colitis with anyone other than Dr. Ferdows. He is one of the most intelligent GI's I have seen. He is very personable and has an amazing staff. I would recommend him to anyone who is have any internal gastro issues. He has earned my respect and loyalty.

Was referred to Dr. Ferdows by my PCP for a colonoscopy. During my initial consult on a Thursday I told him I had gout and was trying to get it under control. He wanted me to have the procedure on the following Tuesday but since I had just started on Allopurinol, I told him I wanted to wait for 3 weeks until the gout was under control. The day prior to my procedure I fasted, and at 6 pm took the first of two prescribed doses of Suprep, a bowl cleaner. I very quickly started to have an acute gout attack, but 5 am I was in extreme pain, 6 am was my next scheduled does of Suprep, so I called his service which put me through to him and he said â??I never heard of a problem with Suprep and Gout, I will cancel the procedure, you can now eat and take the medicine to treat the attack and call the office when you feel better to reschedule.â?? When I finally felt good enough to get online I did a little research as well...first I went to the Suprep Manufacturer â?? Braintree Laboratories… website, and right there in the middle of the page it says â??Use can cause temporary elevations in uric acid. Uric acid fluctuations in patients with gout may precipitate an acute flare.â?? Then I went to the FDA website and it said, â??Suprep Bowel Prep Kit can cause temporary elevations in uric acid. [see Adverse Reactions (6.1)]. Uric acid fluctuations in patients with gout may precipitate an acute flare. The potential for uric acid elevation should be considered before administering Suprep Bowel Prep Kit to patients with gout or other disorders of uric acid metabolism.â?? And it also said â??In a multicenter, controlled clinical trial comparing Suprep Bowel Prep Kit with a bowel prep containing polyethylene glycol and electrolytes (PEG + E) that were administered in a split-dose (2-day) regimen...Table 2 shows the percentages of patients who developed new abnormalities of important electrolytes and uric acid...23.5% of the patients who were given Suprep with a normal baseline had abnormal (high) values at the timepoint(s) of interest, compared to 9.5% of the patients given PEG-Eâ??. He tells me he never heard of a problem with Suprep and Gout! How can that be? Isnâ??t that his job to know these things? Frankly I was appalled! I told him I was having problems controlling my gout, and yet he gave me a medicine that caused the worst gout attack I have ever had, except for the first, when I suffered because I did not know what it was until the pain got so bad I went to the emergency room. I have NO faith in his abilities as a doctor and why should I? His incompetence resulted in a day of fasting, followed by a night and most of the following day of pain for me and for what? Thatâ??s what my research found.

This doctor is to attentive and kind, I wish he was my primary care doctor

Dr. did not come in and discuss findings from colonoscopy with us while we were at the hospital. The nurse was attempting to review with us what the Dr. had written, and even she did not understand what he meant. We ultimately had to request to see the Dr. to review his findings with us. He was just going to put patient on meds without any explanation to us.
