Summary
I chose medicine because I knew that I would have a fulfilling career and be able to make a difference in the lives of others. I chose surgery because I recognized that I could improve patient’s lives. In medicine, many conditions are treated with medications that may or may not work. With surgery, the procedure can be curative or will at least improve the patient’s quality of life. I also enjoy operating and find it to be a rewarding field.
The most rewarding aspect of caring for people is seeing their improvement after surgery. Whether I have alleviated their pain or removed their cancer, patients can see an immediate benefit to the surgery that was performed.
My secret to having a good relationship with my patients is to listen to and be available for them. I also spend a great deal of time educating my patients. I try to ensure that patients are well informed before choosing to undergo surgery.
In order to provide exceptional care for patients, the first thing I do is listen to …the patient. By being an active listener, a physician is able to help diagnose the patients accurately. Second, I educate my patients before allowing them to consent to surgery. I believe education is key in medicine. This is why I constantly try to educate myself on current literature, attend meetings throughout the year, and maintain board certification.
