Dr. Melissa Teitelman

I waited about 9 months for my appointment with Dr. Teitelman. I had seen she specializes in celiac disease and wanted to find someone that could give me answers to questions no one else seemed to be able to. I was hopefully she’d be the right fit for me. At the appointment she gave me vague answers and seemed like she didn’t actually know that much about celiac other than information from her personal friends that have celiac. She even told me some celiac patients can sometimes eat regular cake and get by. I was blown away that a GI doctor would say that. I didn’t come away from the appointment with any new information. She did tell me that now that I’d seen her I’d be able to message her on MyChart with any questions that came up. My first question I had, I messaged her and a nurse responded with more questions which I answered and then I was just left hanging with no resolution to my questions. Definitely no contact with Dr. Teitelman. What really bothered me most is… that she put in labs for genetic testing which I’ve waited for results for three weeks. Today when I called for an update I found out she sent me to the wrong lab for the blood draw and I’d have to go somewhere else. Poor service and a waste of time and money.

I switched specifically to women doctors - Dr. Coppolino and Dr. Tietleman because I thought they would be more compassionate since my previous doctor at Duke said I was "too young to have any problems". Unfortunately that is not what I received. I have been having the same symptoms for 9 months now and these doctors have given up - they believed the few test they ran themselves were enough to say nothing is wrong with me. I thought living so close to Duke would be a blessing but the run around has been a nightmare.

I have been seeing Dr. Teitleman for years and from the very first visit, she and her team at Duke GI made me feel comfortable and in good hands. After having had a bad experience with another GI Dr. I was so happy to meet her. I came to them VERY ill. But she knew what to do, listened to my concerns and took the time to explain things to me so I could understand what was happening to me. Something the other GI didn't do. She changed my life for the better. I am forever grateful for that. So in my eyes, she is fantastic all around.

I would highly recommend Dr. Teitelman. I was anxious about the procedure, but she and her staff made me feel very comfortable and actually listened to my concerns and addressed them in a way that I went into the procedure totally calm and unworried. Super bedside manner!!

Worst bedside manner of any doctor I have ever seen. Do your self a favor there our many gastro doctors at Duke please pick another! I actually work in the healthcare field and some of her practices and comments "if we actually ate like Europeans instead of American's we would not be sick." I Shame on her, I have a brain Tumor I have been fighting for 4 years. I came there to get help with my stomach problems, not to be in tears when I left!
