Dr. Merrick Mcmains

I brought my son in and saw Erin, the NP. I had to repeat the timeline of my son's sickness repeatedly and she still couldn't get it accurately. She did not treat him and when I asked her again to give him medication to relieve him of symptoms, she said to come back in a week. She neglected my son's infection, lacked attention to detail, and was greedy by asking for him to come back to treat him at a later date. I felt in my heart she was neglecting my child and I knew something was seriously wrong. I took him to get a second opinion the next day and the DOCTOR at ARC was thorough with my son. He gave him multiple tests including xrays to find that he DID have an infection. The radiologist called it one of the worst he's ever seen. I called Dr. McMain to tell him how disappointed I was in Erin's lack of care. He didn't ask what happened, he didn't ask to see my son, didn't apologize for their mistake, and showed no empathy. He instead referred me to an urgent care or ER. He… was my child's doctor for 7 years and it was 7 too long. This dark office doesn't give proper care, the provider's clearly don't care about patient care, and they are more interested in cattle herd of patients for money. ARC had everything in the same place and were able to give my son's results immediately. The doctor actually listened to my son, his symptoms, was CONCERNED, and TREATED him. We only go to the doctor a couple times a year and so I turned my cheek when little things kept happening. I was patient for too long with Dr. Mcmain. Removing my children from his care and taking them to ARC. Having a real doctor versus a Nurse Practitioner is important. Having a doctor who cares about your child's health is even better. Never going back!

1) I made the earliest possible appointment to take my little one in and waited in the lobby for 30 minutes (arrived 10 minutes before appointment time, then waited 20 to be called in) before I was finally brought inside the appointment rooms. While I was waiting to be called in (after my appointment time) I sat there watching the staff and then the doctor slowly roll in the door (obviously late in to work, late in to start). FRUSTRATING! 2) My little one was born with a small dimple on her bottom and we initially had that checked out fully when she was born. Well Dr. M checked it out and suggested we do more exams as a precaution. But we had told him we already did everything at the hospital when my little one was initially born and that they confirmed that everything was okay. 2 days later I get a call from Dr. M's office and they leave a message telling me "Hello, please call our office we would like to recommend a neurologist for your little one. Thank you". OMG what kind of… voice mail is that to get your child's doctor's office. I freaked! Oh course, I called them back and everything was okay. 3) My husband took our little one to get her ears pierced and when he brought her back home, I told him that one of them was significantly higher up that the other side. I called the doctor's office to tell them and get that re-pierced at her next appointment and they wanted me to pay all over again for something they did wrong, I could not understand this! Will be looking for a new Pediatrician ASAP.

We initially took our son here when we thought he might be having neurological issues. Before taking him to see Dr. McMains, we had called several neurologists on our own and were told it would take over 3 months to get in to see them. We saw Dr. McMains the day after we called to make an appointment, he examined our son and agreed that he needed to get in to see the neurologist sooner rather than later. By the next day, he had us an appointment for the next week. I cannot say enough about his responsiveness above and beyond the call of duty. He was extremely positive and helpful during a very stressful time for us as parents. As a self-pay patient his cost was also reasonable. He has also been very respectful of our parenting choices, and our kids seem to love him. We have 4 children and are so glad we have found a pediatrician we can trust for their needs. We also have several friends who have taken their children to see Dr. McMains and all of them have had… excellent experiences as well.

(1) They don't take credit cards (unlike just about every other doctor's office).(2) When we made our appointment and told them we'd be paying out of pocket, they didn't *warn* us that they don't take credit cards, which led to the following debacle:(3) When M. took our kids in for their appointment, the staff wouldn't let them see the doctor because of payment concerns, even though M. had $140 in cash on her (and even though it was their fault for not warning us that they don't take credit cards). They apparently would have seen us only if we walked in with several hundred or thousands of dollars of cash (and they certainly didn't warn us of that unusual requirement when we made the appointment).(4) M. called me so I could talk to the staff, and I told them I was across town, but that when I was finished I could come in and pay any difference in cash. They agreed. Then as soon as they got off the phone they changed their mind, and sent M. and the kids home to wait for another… appointment. This needlessly wasted our time.The only reason we went back again was because this doctor could see us faster than others. The kicker was that when we went back, they didn't even charge us for the visit, as all we needed was a letter for the school saying that a certain vaccine was contraindicated based on a past reaction, and the nurse who saw us didn't think that was chargeable. Yet the first time we visited, $140 and a platinum credit card wasn't enough for them, despite their own failure to warn us they didn't take credit cards. Four strikes and you're out. Never again.

I have two girls one is a 3yr old and a 3 month old... My oldest child has been coming to Longhorn Pediatrics since she was a new born... I love the great attention I am given when I come to their office.... I feel comfortable when I go in for an appointment and feel secure that my girls are getting taken care of... I would recommend Dr. Mc Mains to any mom...

Dr. McMains is very caring and spends much of his time serving the underprivileged community of Austin, TX. His experience and care are a comfort to any parent who's holding a sick child.

I wanted to talk to the doctor for my daughter's Umbilical cord as I suspected an infection. Inspite of me calling them 4 times. They didn't return my call and the nurse have no idea about letting me know whether we should give bath to the baby or not. My baby is only 15 days old and I don't expect this kind of treatment. One of the worst that I have seen.
