Dr. Michael Anthony Berk, MD

After arriving on time and filling out the “new” patient forms, I was informed that Dr. Burk would not see me because new patients had to arrive 15 min early. As I’ve been a patient at Wash U for the last year, I was not informed of this preference. I revisited voicemails to verify that I had not been informed. I apologized for not knowing and asked if there was any way to resolve this since I had taken off work and driven over two hours for the appointment (it was a horrible traffic day due to flooding). His assistant/nurse was beyond rude, bordering hostile, without warrant. I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior in a medical offices. At that point I refused to make another appointment. I believe the assistant/nurse and Mr. Burk should be reminded that as patients, we are there to seek medical help, and they are there because of us patients...Not the other way around. If they can’t wait 5 minutes for us to fill out their forms, I’d hate to see them wait the same weeks… to months patients do for such an appointment. The intolerable rudeness may have been 100% his assistants actions. However, in past experiences we have noted that a Dr.’s staff is the first place you will often see the first signs of poor patient care for many, many reasons.

First visite; trying to find a new Dr. I was told I would get a physical.....and I had to tell him I was told that. He sort of chuckled. Listened to my breathing and walked away from me before I even exhaled. Did the reflex tap on knees....first one he got a response, the second one he walked away after tapping without trying to get a response. Was very friendly and liked to tell stories. I feel like he looked at me and figured I didn't have anything wrong worth looking into. Didn't really have a chance to tell him all of my concerns. He ordered bloodwork....didn't tell me what or why. It has been 3 weeks and I haven't heard a thing from his office.

He is a very caring professional. He takes his time to answer my questions and concerns. The staff has always been helpful during my visits and some phone calls.

I am more than pleased with the level of service I ALWAYS receive under Dr. Berk's care. The frontline staff are always cordial, pleasant, and caring and the technicians are professional and qualified. The foot nurse is at the very top of her game - I have been to a LOT of foot nurses, and I KNOW the good from the bad! Dr. Berk is personable, knowledgeable, caring, and HUMAN! I have not only referred other family members to Dr. Berk, but I have physically escorted them to his office. If you are a senior citizen - diabetic or not - I would recommend Dr. Berk to treat you from head to toe.

Dr. Berk is a good doctor, he has been my general physician for about 6 years. He listens to what you have to say and answers as many questions as you might have. He makes changes as appropriate to medications if needed, and apparently accurately diagnoses things. The only disconcerting thing about his manner is that he leaves without saying goodbye, so you might not be sure the appointment is over. However, you can call him back if you have further questions. The phone hours are misstated or something because in the afternoon they stop answering the phone about an hour before it is stated. I wish they would fix this.

I have seen Dr. Burk on several occasions for annual checkups, etc, never for an actual illness. Most recently I was looking for wellness input as I turned 40. Despite repeated requests, I got very little useful input. He was much more interested in telling me about some computer upgrades he'd recently done on his home PCs. Of the 10 minutes of facetime, over 5 was spent on this topic. Seriously, he wouldn't quit. I was able to get him to run some minimal blood work (cholesterol, lipids). To retrieve the results, you have to call a voicemail system, where he quickly reads them off. There's no formal report delivered, so I've now forgotten the numbers. On the plus side, I've never waited long in the waiting area. I won't be going back after this most recent visit.

Dr. Berk spent 5 minutes with me and during this period yawned about 10 times. Apparently my 5 years of medical problems were boring for his 5 minute $200 office visit. Terrible experience with him. I have no idea how he received Best Doctor Award in St. Louis. Do not waste you time.

I had great success with Dr. Berk. He helped treat my migraines and took plenty of time with me and we even chatted about his daughter and my family. It seems that most of the negative reviews relate to the office--not Dr. Berk. While staff is an important consideration, I really only care about having a competent doctor and Dr. Berk is that.

I would recommend Dr. Berk. He diagnosed my strep infection which had been missed by a doctor's visit the previous day. He was congenial and very professional. I would not hesitate to recommend him to any close friend.
