During the four years that he directed the program, more than 20,000 much-needed textbooks were sent to medical institutions in Liberia, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. The program was a joint venture of the NYU School of Medicine, U.S. State Department, textbook publishers, and corporate philanthropists. In 1992, Dr. Burnett won the NYU President’s Award for Volunteerism and Community Service. Two years later he was awarded the Alex Rosen Award for Excellence in Medicine and Humanities.
