Dr. Michael Gerard Hegewald, MD

I have been a patient of Dr Hegewald for many years and his diagnosis and treatment has kept me active and alive. Progressing from angioplasty and stents to open heart valve replacement (by the best heart surgeon at Harrison) and through cardio rehab he has monitored, prescribed, cardio care to my great benefit. I just completed my annual, comprehensive physical with my general care physician. They crunched the numbers on my vitals and, at age 86, gave me a 76% chance of making 96. Can't ask for anything more.

I have Ben seeing this doctor for nearly 1 year now. He has yet to tell me Anything about my CHF no updates on the condition example getting worse, need additional meds nothing. Not sure he actually gives a darn and I’m not just a number. Need to find another cardiologist!

I had a stress test with this dr. in 2006. Staff not pleasant. When dr. was supposed to explain my diagnoses, it was a night-time appt. I have a hearing problem. He mumbled with his head down reading his notes and got VERY annoyed when I wasn't understanding. He then loudly SHOUTED at me in the rudest, most unprofessional and angry way. I got up and left, angry and shocked and very shaken. I didn't know what was wrong with my heart. He sent my Primary dr. enough info that she was able to RX for me. In 2015 I again needed a stress test and went where I was referred to in a different clinic location. The staff was different and MUCH nicer to me. I later was to see the Dr. I discovered it was the SAME dr. I vowed I would NEVER again deal with in person and cancelled my appt. I did manage to find out what my basic heart problem is...and electrical BBB which a beta-blocker takes care of the symptoms for me. I don't doubt that Dr. Hegewald knows his business but his patient… face-to-face (at least with me) is HORRIBLE and very unprofessional IMO. I don't know how to tell my GP in a tactful way that I want NOTHING whatsoever to do with this dr. in a personal way...ever. I'll probably wait until such time as she again sends me to a cardiologist and I will tell her "anyone other than Dr. Hegewald".

First of all, most dr. staffs are efficient but his staff, in particular, are a cheerful group and , when needed, kindly reassuring. Someone who went with me said of Dr. Hegewald, "He's no-nonsense, efficient, and gets things done." And I thought, "That about sums it up." He didn't give up when I thought "This isn't working". And because of that determination, I'm now doing fine., Would I recommend him? Absolutely!

This guy knows his business and gets the job done. He talks fast and works fast. He knows what he is doing and why. Follow-up was excellent. Did all tests (including exploratory operation) necessary to diagnose my problem within a day or two. If you want someone who knows what to do and gets it done this is your guy. If you want someone to talk to you and hold your hand to make you feel better this is not your guy. Those guys send their patients to this guy if they need help with a diagnosis.

NO follow up no call no clogged arteries. I was told I needed to come in right away so the following week I am scheduled for surgery. HMMMM clean arteries. Dr. said he was going to talk to his tech and see why I was scheduled when my arteries were clear. Never heard back from the guy or his office. Terrible bed side manner, no explanations and no follow up.

I was in and out of his examination room in less than 10 minutes. His staff was great, but I didn't feel very comforted, informed, or that any progress had been made on the diagnosis after talking with him. He ended it with "Well call me if anything changes, but it'll probably go away on it's own..." as he was walking out the door of the room.
