Dr. Michael Joseph Heimerl, MD

He was my doctor growing up and he was completely heartless. I don’t think he ever smiled once or made conversation with me. I’m incredibly confused as to how he decided to work with children. I struggled with mental illness as a teen and I’ll never forget my yearly physical when I sobbed for the entire appointment when he addressed my anxiety issues stone faced. Not an ounce of compassion. Once in college, I avoided doctors for several years. It wasn’t until my mid twenties when I realized there are kind, compassionate doctors in this world unlike him.

Very rude and poor bedside manner. Did not listen to concerns with my child and completely dismissed them. 30 second interaction. I had more answers before seeing this doctor. Only bad experience I’ve had with Tonawanda peds!

I have been a mother for twenty five years. I took my youngest in for his annual check up today and he was seen by Dr Mike. My son has been diagnosed with MILD adhd and has never been on medication. He has been struggling a bit in school this year (he is 13 and in 8th grade) and this Doctor told me that my son should be in medication. I told him that I would like to consider other options first and he did not provide any suggestions or resources. He told me time was running out and my son would be a failure if I didn’t medicate him. He said this to me IN FRONT IF MY SON. I will NEVER step foot in this practice again. He should be ashamed of himself.

My daughters see a great physician at theTransit Meadow location. The other day we had to go to the walk in sick clinic. My daughter was having obvious signs of a UTI. Dr. Mike listened to me explain what was going on then the entire visit he spent telling me that my daughter wasn't potty trained and I need to work on it more and gave pointer after pointer on how to properly toilet train (My daughter is trained and for some reason he failed to listen to me or believe that...). I asked him to explain why she is screaming in pain when she urinates to which he continued to tell me I need to continue working on toilet training. He said he didn't think a urine sample was necessary because he highly doubted an infection to which I had to explain to him that it was necessary and she already provided a sample as I asked for a cup when we first got there. I then had to tell him they did a urine dip already and asked him what the results were. He looked at his computer for one second and said it… was normal. The next day the office called to tell me she has a UTI and will need antibiotics. No kidding. Later I looked at her online chart urine dip results and it wasn't normal at all (obviously). He lied to my face. This is what concerns me most. Thankfully I work in the medical field and knew not to trust his advice. Please advocate for your child. Please don't see this doctor.

I have seen many doctors at Tonawanda Pediatrics and this was the first time I've ever had a bad experience. The other reviews are correct, this doctor has horrible bedside manner and is very condescending. It was an awful experience and I still have this terrible feeling in my stomach from interacting with Dr. Mike. I would recommend that any mom or dad thinking of taking their child to him ask to see a different doctor. There are plenty of good, kind doctors at Tonawanda Pediatrics I advise you see one of them instead.

I do feel he is respected by his peers, he has seen many children given his age/years of practice. I take it as voice of reason but clearly he has not a mom (haha)Sometimes it's refreshing too that he's a bit more relaxed about strict text book guidelines to when it comes to measurements of growth and development. It helps to put things in perspective. So although he can seem rude, his advice can also be comforting.

We love Tonawanda peds but Dr. Mike is rude and lacking in skills. We will never see Dr. Mike Heimerl again.

I love Tonawanda Pediatrics and this is the first time my daughter has seen Dr. Mike. Upon entering the exam room, he did not knock to announce his arrival, did NOT smile the entire visit nor did he seem very kid friendly. He basically made me feel horrible, as a mother, about my opinions of my daughter's symptoms. My daughter supposedly has asthma and he was appalled at the fact that her school nurse did not want my daughter to use a spacer with her inhaler so he proceeded to whip out his notepad and wrote a note to the school nurse saying that ALL children AND adults should use a spacer with inhalers. He said no one on this planet can use an inhaler without one and that it is IMPOSSIBLE to suck in the medicine when it is going into your mouth at 60 mph. Ok then. Although I will continue using this doctor's office, I will NOT be seeing this miserable physician. If you are going to be in pediatrics, at least now how to associate with children.

This guy is alright in terms of his skills, my biggest issue with him is that he can be extremely condescending in the way he speaks to parents. I switched to Dr. Kanaley (who is wonderful) years ago but still see Dr. Heimerl for the occasional sick visit, and he is just as condescending as ever. When I tried to ask about medicine for my sick child, he refused to help me even figure out dosage. He just kept repeating "The thing about cough treatments is that they don't work," Me: Can you recommend a medicine? Dr."The thing about cough treatments is that they don't work," Me: What can I do to help him feel more comfortble? Dr.: "The thing about cough treatments is that they don't work," Me: I've been giving him.... Would it be safe to increase the dose? Him: "The thing about cough treatments is that they don't work." This is actually how he responded to me and to my questions.
