I had severe abdominal and chest pain and discomfort that would last about a month, in which time I had all sorts of tests done including an ultrasound. I also made 2 E.R. visits in this time because the pain was so severe that I thought something very wrong was happening in my body. There were times at my house where I would think, "If the doctors can't figure out what is wrong with me, nobody can and I'm going to die". He tried putting me on Nexium for acid reflux which I refused to take after reading through the insert that accompanied the samples. The last time I ever saw Kruk was when we sat down after my ultrasound. He scheduled me for a CT Scan the following week. This is when I finally decided to ask him if diet could be a factor. At the time, I ate very unhealthy. I told him how I would start my day off with a bowl of sugar cereal and milk and maybe a piece of fruit. I told him how the rest of my diet included frozen pizza, Spaghettios, fish sticks, pasta, frozen… veggies, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, candy bars...etc. You know, mostly terrible stuff to be putting into a body on a regular basis. After describing to him my diet his response was, "No, it's probably not that. We will see you next week". I left his office that day and on my drive home thought to myself, If I told anybody else in the world this, I feel their response would be, "Probably not, but give it a try for a few days, it won't hurt you to eat a little healthier, though it may not fix your issue". I decided to go against what my doctor said (Wait, what?!) and eat healthier. I still had no clue of what real nutrition was but followed what I'd learned in school and on TV. I starting each morning with fresh fruit and oatmeal with some nuts on top. Lunch would be a salad with turkey or chicken breast. Dinner would be a sandwich on whole wheat bread. Within 3 days, ALL of my problems went away. The chest pain I had for a month was completely gone and never returned to this day. The acid reflux I had for as long as I could remember stopped and only returns about once a year if I go off the rails for a weekend. How could this be? How could my doctor not know that nutrition and diet was key to the cure I needed? Down the rabbit hole I went. I became obsessed with nutrition and learned that most doctors at the time were only taught about 8 hours worth of nutrition when they were in med school. I also learned about the corruption between pharmaceutical reps and doctors. I felt as if I had been a pawn in a money making scheme. Or, my doctor was just ignorant because he was taught so much about the human body and drugs, but not about diet or nutrition. I ended up going to school for nutrition because I wanted to change this. I wanted MDs to take at least a semester in nutrition and know that nutrition is the base for preventing disease. Flash forward to 2015. I think the change has been going on for a few years now and will only get better. I know some doctors who are taking time to take the nutrition classes they weren't forced to take in med school. I'm also opening my own business in Madison, WI this year. I see my whole ordeal as a blessing in disguise now. Anytime you go to a doctor for something health related, first ask about nutrition and diet. If the doctor doesn't know about these things, get out of there and find another doctor. The good ones are out there and are becoming more plentiful each day.
