Dr. Michael Jonathan Lieber, MD

I suddenly developed extreme weight loss, fatigue and cough, and weakness that would not go away. My primary physician ordered customary lab tests but every test he ordered came back negative. I was eventually referred to several highly regarded infectious disease doctors only to be told they have no idea why I developed those symptoms. I was prescribed highly expensive medications that had no effect on the illness. One day a friend advised me to call the office of Dr. Lieber which, fortunately, I did. I explained to his receptionist why I wanted a consultation. I also explained my history of seeing several doctors who could not discover why I became so ill suddenly. Dr. Lieber's receptionist referred my information to him while I was still on the telephone. Dr. Lieber came on the telephone to talk with me. He asked questions about my health prior to the sudden illness that no one could diagnose. While on the telephone with me, he heard some odd noises and… asked me what the noise was. I explained to him that pigeons had moved into the attic of my office building and were constantly making noises. Dr. Lieber could hear the pigeons cooing and moving around in the attic. Then, Dr. Lieber asked if I could come to his office immediately because "I think I might know why you are ill" - I went to Dr. Lieber's office and he drew blood and sent it to a laboratory. The blood came back positive for psittacosis, a bird disease, caused by the pigeons that had made their home in the ceiling above my office. Although I had been ill for several months and had been referred to several specialists who found no answer for my illness, Dr. Lieber prescribed small antibiotic tablets that cost around fifteen cents each. Dr. Lieber said it is easy to treat psittacosis but you must know what is being treated. Almost immediately after I began the antibiotic regimen, I felt better and was on the mend. Fortunately, I do not have any long-lasting damage from the psittacosis being in my system and not being treated because no prior doctor checked for psittacosis. Needless to say, in my opinion, Dr. Lieber is a wonderful physician and deserves respect far more than most other physicians. I am sure Dr. Lieber would remember me although it has been quite some time since this matter occurred. I hope he is doing well and still seeing patients and finding cures that get missed by other physicians.

This doctor failed to discuss how bad my father's condition was. I am a registered nurse with 18 years but it's not my responsibility to inform my parents, sibling, families and friends that my dad could be dying. Dr. Lieber failed to discuss my father's diagnosis, test/diagnostic results. prognosis, resuscitation status, and all he said is "he's ok now to be transferred", meaning to another facility where my father's main insurance is. He does not have any respect at all most of the nurses, disregarded the nurse's instructions to call the admitting facility for a verbal hand-over. If that is what their hospital call clinical excellence, I wonder what appalling care is.
