Dr. Michael John Mello, MD

Michael Mello, MD, MPH, is an expert in injury prevention for both children and adults. He is director of the Injury Prevention Center at Rhode Island Hospital, which develops community outreach, education and research programs aimed at preventing injuries before they occur. Mello has taken part in numerous statewide and nationwide initiatives in public health and injury prevention. Most recently, he was appointed chair of the to the Rhode Island Department of Health Injury Community Planning Group. He is the American College of Emergency Physician (ACEP) liaison for the Home Safety Council Technical Advisory Board and served on the American Medical Association Older Driver Project Review Committee and the Centers for Disease Control Scientific Review Panel. He serves on the Rhode Island National Violent Death Review System advisory committee, the Rhode Island CODES Advisory Committee, and the Rhode Island Child Death Review Committee. Mello's research interests include the role of …injury prevention in emergency medicine; alcohol and injury; traffic safety and home safety. He is currently co-principal investigator on research funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Emergency Medicine Foundation. An attending staff physician at The Miriam Hospital, Mello is also an assistant professor of emergency medicine and community health at Brown Medical School and co-director of the Community Health Clerkship. He has more than 15 years of experience teaching medical students and residents and has published more than 30 scholarly articles and abstracts. Mello earned a bachelor's degree in biology from Boston University, a doctor of medicine degree from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and a master's degree in public health from Boston University School of Public Health.
