Dr. Michael D. Milligan is a sports medicine physician who specializes in treating the full range of musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. Conditions he treats include joint pain, arthritis, muscle sprains and overuse injuries, traumatic injuries, as well as, sports-related concussions. Dr. Milligan has expertise in treating sports-related injuries and medical conditions in athletes of all ages and abilities. His specialty is also in assessing spine-related conditions, cardiovascular health in athletes, and guiding the optimization of patient health prior to orthopedic surgery. As Program Director at HSS Florida, Dr. Milligan has an extensive background leading sports medicine programs and outreach initiatives within organizations and throughout the community. He is the former Medical Director of Nonsurgical Sports Medicine at Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at Baptist Health Care. In this role he also served as Director of External Development for the Sports Medicine Outreach program which provided care to 23 high schools spread over four counties, several colleges, and numerous local events. He served as faculty for their Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. In his role as Program Director for the Sports Concussion Program, Dr. Milligan led the creation of a comprehensive sports concussion program integrating physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapy specialists, and other clinical specialties to care for injured athletes. Dr. Milligan also served in leadership roles with various organizational endeavors. Dr. Milligan was integral to the development of the surgical pre-optimization clinic which successfully demonstrated improved post-operative outcomes after orthopedic surgery. He was actively involved in CMS bundled payment initiatives that led to reduced episode of care costs in joint arthroplasty. Dr. Milligan also led the development of an integrated multidiscipline spine pathway. Prior to his work at the Andrews Institute in Western Florida, Dr. Milligan was Head Team Physician and Director of Intercollegiate Sports Medicine at Northwestern University (NU), Assistant Professor at the Feinberg School of Medicine in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, and on faculty at the Lurie Children�s Hospital of Chicago Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sports Medicine Fellowship. As Medical Director and Head Team Physician for NU athletics, Dr. Milligan provided direct day-to-day care of Division I student-athletes and was responsible for developing a comprehensive sports medicine program to serve all student-athletes competing in Division I athletics. Additionally, Dr. Milligan led the development of an integrated sports medicine service that not only served Division I student-athletes but also served all club and intramural athletes, as well as, the general student population at Northwestern University. In overseeing the integration of intercollegiate athletic sports medicine services with university student health services, Dr. Milligan led the accreditation of athletic sports medicine services at Northwestern University by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Dr. Milligan completed sports medicine fellowship at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) Sports Medicine Fellowship in Las Vegas Nevada. As a sports medicine fellow Dr. Milligan provided direct daily care to University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) Division I student-athletes. After completion of a two-year sports medicine fellowship which included completion of a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Dr. Milligan was named the first Head Team Physician and Medical Director for UNLV Athletics and was later named Program Director of the UNSOM Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship in Las Vegas. At UNLV he served on the Institutional Review Board, as Medical Director of the Undergraduate Athletic Training Program and Athletic Training Research Lab, and as an Adjunct Associate Professor. A native of North Carolina, Dr. Milligan completed his undergraduate education at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC where he was a letterman in football and graduated with honors. He completed medical school at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University where he was a recipient of the Brody Scholars Program. He completed residency training at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina and went on to practice in Goldsboro and Greenville, North Carolina prior to entering sports medicine fellowship. During these early career years, Dr. Milligan regularly served as a sideline physician at high school sporting events and other community events. Outside of work, Dr. Milligan is an avid cyclist and endurance athlete. He has competed in numerous cycling and ultrarunning events and cycled across the United States from San Francisco to Washington. DC. Dr. Milligan also is active in his community. He served on the board of the Children�s Home Society (CHS) Western Division and is a former recipient of the CHS Child Advocate of the Year award. Dr. Milligan is a past president of the Florida Alliance for Sports Medicine (FASMed).
