Dr. Michael Luan Phuon Nguyen

My mom has wanted her beautiful smile back from 40 years ago and has been undergoing multiple procedures to make that happen. Sadly, she is terrified of the dentist and suffers from panic attacks. To help her through her journey I have gone with her to every appointment. She has spent over $30,000 and up until this point every single dentist, hygienist, assistant and oral surgeon that has worked on her has been so understanding, patient, kind and considerate. This morning my mom was scheduled for an unexpected root canal with Dr. Nguyen. Unfortunately, he and his assistant, Letty, were not so understanding, patient, kind and considerate. Like clockwork as soon as my mom saw the dental chair the panic attack started coming on. Through her tears she sat in the chair and the assistant started to hook her up to the nitrous oxide machine. I stood by her side and reminded her to breathe. As a tear rolled down my mom’s cheek the assistant asked me to leave. I backed up into the doorway and… told the assistant that I will leave once she has calmed down. My mom then said she could not breathe out of the NO2 mask. I confirmed with the assistant that the gas was on, but my mom kept repeating that she could not breathe from the mask. After a few minutes Dr. Nguyen walked in, put on his exam gloves, turns to me, and said, “At this point I need to ask you to leave”. I explained to him that my mom suffers from panic attacks and that I would not leave until she has calmed down. My mom was still tearing up, not able to breathe from the NO2 mask and repeating that the mask was not working. Dr. Nguyen did not seem to care as he continued prepping for the procedure. The assistant then told me I needed to go wait in the lobby because they had to close the door in order for the gas to work. Having been through this before with understanding and empathic dentists I knew that was a bold face lie. There was no way I was leaving my mom when she was in the middle of a panic attack and the NO2 was not working. FINALLY, Dr. Nguyen looked up from what he was doing, reached over and turned the NO2 machine on. Not 45 seconds later my mom was calm and said she was ok. I turned immediately and walked to the lobby. About 3 minutes later the office manager came out and explained that Dr. Nguyen had cancelled the root canal. That Dr. Nguyen did not like what happened and now refuses my mom as a patient. I feel so sorry for the thousands of other patients who have been ignored by this endodontist’s arrogance.
