Dr. Michael Steven Powell, MD

Dr. Powell has been our pediatrician since my first son was born, who is now 21. He is without a doubt the best pediatrician in Huntsville. He has been practicing medicine for a really long time (I want to say over 40 years, though I can't swear to that.) He's seen everything, so he doesn't get overly concerned about minor issues. But when an issue arises that is potentially serious, he jumps on it immediately!!! He tries to treat problems himself, but is not hesitant to refer you to a specialist if the problem is beyond his level of expertise. Unlike many physicians, he is not scared to admit if he doesn't have the answer to something. He is highly intelligent, but is not at all condescending. He can quote amazing numbers of statistics and reference all the latest medical research, so he definitely continues to educate himself, despite his vast experience level! He is VERY good about spending time with you, answering questions, and educating you about what is going on with your… child. (Of course, you do have long waits at times but it is worth it because you know he is going to spend whatever time with you is needed.) He is a very strong and devoted Christian, and it is obvious to me that he went into medicine as a calling.....not just for the money or prestige! He truly cares about his patients and their families. He has given me his personal home and cell phone numbers many times over the years with instructions to call him at any time if my child's condition seemed to be worsening or if I had additional questions or concerns. (I know of NO other physician in town who would give out their personal contact information like that!) I have called him at home directly in the middle of the night before and he was nothing but patient and informative! I'm sure he must have a saint for a wife as well, for her to have been willing to support him like that though all these years! My youngest child is still only eleven, and I'm just praying that Dr. Powell will continue to practice medicine at least long enough for me to get him into late adolescence! He has always had an awesome relationship with all my kids! He loves babies, but is definitely at his best once the kids are old enough to talk and interact with him! As you can see by the length of this review, I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful doctor and man!

My experience with this Doctor was horrible. I didnt like how he put his arm around my baby face to check his ears. My baby cried horribly because of that. I didnt feel like his advice gave me a peace of mind. I thought he was rude to me and my baby. He will never see my baby again.

He is older, so he's been doing this for a long time and knows what he's talking about (I think he's seen everything). He has a great bedside manner and is always available for you. He works with your vaccination schedule as well.

Dr. Powell is a wonderful doctor. My son is now 14 and the relationship he has with Dr. Powell is great. My son is comfortable talking with him about anything. Dr. Powell cares about his patients total well being physical health, emotional health, and happiness in every day life. I fell like he is a gift that I was able to offer my child I wish there were more like him!!!

Dr. Powell is a wonderful doctor. He is kind of old school. He doesnt believe you need antibiotics for every illness, some just need to run there course. The kids love him. My daughter loves him to pieces. We have going there since she was born. He talks to the child to, after all they are the patient. I once saw him play catch with a young boy to check his reflexes, instead of using the instrument for it, because the boy was scared of it. He is a good doctor that really care about his kids. He is a blessing to our family. His staff are excellent and very friendly. He also usually has doctor interns in his office because he helps them learn whats its really like to be a pediatrician. If you want a doctor thats honest and genuinely cares about your child, he's the one you want.

My son is 3 months old. I noticed he has the signs of whooping cough. I asked powell to test him for it. He walked in and listened to him. Never gave him any test. He said my son didnt have whooping cough, but he had rsv. Later that night, my son went into something like an asthma attack. He couldn't breath and was like he was struggling for air. i took my son to the ER and he was tested and diagnosed with whoopin cough. I am changing his doctor asap. If I had not taken my son to the ER, who knows what might have happened. I was thinking about changing his doctor before, but now I am for sure changing. What harm could it have done to test him, even if he really didnt have the symptoms? I am so glad I took him to the ER. I don't recommend this doctor at all, unless you dont mind that your oppinion doesn't matter. I'm not a doctor, and I knew my son has the whooping cough.

My oldest child saw Dr. Powell for several years until we were able to get in with another pediatrician. The office staff at Powell's office are excellent people and the wait time isn't bad- which is important when you have a sick child. Powell is another story, he is very moody so if you do use him I highly recommend a morning appointment. Although his bedside manner is never very good, it's even less tolerable in the afternoon. He doesn't take the time to explain anything and gets aggregated when you ask questions. He walks in the exam room and sprawls out in his chair like he's at home on the couch. He's very unprofessional and his personal hygiene is unbearable at times.
