Dr. Michael Paul Steinkampf, MD

Not a positive experience and ended up going to another fertility clinic that we felt actually wanted to help us. If he cared as much about his patients as he does his bee's, then maybe he would get 5 stars.

Fertility is not an exact science at least not in Alabama. This doctor acts a maverik scientist which he is not. Be honest that more than likely it will not work. Billing practices are muddy. Charges you for the whole procedure and then bills insurance as well. his results are not any better than others. Staff are very sweet only till you make your big payment..

My first visit to his office and interaction with the staff was a good experience. Dr. Steinkampf sucks with his bedside manner, and is rude. I have had some medical issues for awhile, and all he did was look at my lab work and say that I was in ovarian failure and early menapause. No compassion, and talked to me like I was stupid. I have another appointment with him in the coming weeks, and we will see how it goes. If he treats me the same way he did when me and my husband met with him, I will not be using him.

I was all excited about finally getting a referral to see why I cant conceive. I called to make my appointment only to be told this Dr. only sees married couples. I explained that I have been in my relationship for 5 years. The nurse stated they only see married women. WOW! This is 2014, you can be in a great healthy relationship fit to have a child and NOT be married. This office needs to come into the NEW WORLD.

I should say at the outset that my case was probably more complicated than most--almost a decade of infertility and multiple losses. However, after seeing several other fertility specialists in Birmingham, I cannot recommend Dr. Steinkampf. He is knowledgeable and spent time with my husband and me and answered our questions, but I never felt like his goal was to get us pregnant. We wasted multiple cycles with Clomid and IUI when we were more than willing to try IVF, but he only does IVF 4 times a year. It felt like he was stringing us along or wearing us down before suggesting that if we do IVF we should use an egg donor because of my advanced age--38. We were subsequently told by other Drs that my advanced age and risk of multiples necessitates IVF and we should never have tried the other protocols. I've heard from several former patients that he pushes for egg donor in advanced age patients. But he never asked us how much time and money we were willing to invest with IVF… using my eggs, and I think that was a valuable piece of information. We now have 2 children (genetically ours) that were conceived using the group at Brookwood, who seem more than willing to take on tough cases like ours. I know that Dr. Steinkampf is considered a wonderful Dr., and I'm not disputing that. I'm simply recounting my experience and I hope that my review helps at least one person make an informed decision.

The staff do not communicate clear instructions for their patients. You are given a piece of paper with needed blood tests and are sent to the lab. The lab draws your blood and gives you the paper back. Nobody takes the time to instruct you where to go after the lab. You wonder around and have to ask someone where to go. When you finally find someone they tell you to give the paper to the desk and go back to the waiting room. I saw one woman in the waiting room that had her blood drawn sitting there with her piece of paper. I wonder how long she sat their before someone noticed she hadn't received instructions. They need to be more aware of the confusing process and offer clear instructions.

My first visit with Dr Steinkampf was a very comfortable one,it was like I've been seeing him for a long time.I would highly recommend him.

I went to his office after already having 8 previous miscarriages, 2 ectopics 1 ruptured, I had all of my records sent before my first visit, but because I had my tubes tied and reversed he told me "I assumed all of the miscarriages were tubals", after we did a failed round of IVF, the only one we could ever afford. Then he decided to get some genetic testing,after the fact. Which determined I have MTHFR that required more treatment, and I needed it for a few months before doing IVF. So had he actually reviewed my records, he would have seen that at least two of the previous losses were intrauterine, ultrasound pics included. All he said was "well if you want to try again we can add the other treatments". Maybe it would have helped, maybe not, but we'll never know. It's been 3 years and I still cannot believe I didnt ask more questions and demand him to look deeper. Probably because everyone kept saying he is the "Best". Just remember, do not believe everything your hear. Still… devastated and probably will never be able to overcome his mistake. When you pay someone to review your records and they are the best, you assume the information they are providing is researched, studied and accurate. I deserved a fair chance, which I did't get.So I hope if you choose this doctor, please do not hesitate to ask lot's of questions! Make sure you have a fair chance.

I highly recommend Dr. Steinkampf. I have had multiple issues, from miscarriage, to goiter, to the absence of my period for almost a year. I saw multiple doctors before finally finding Dr. Steimkampf. I brought all of my medical records to my first appointment (which was quite a stack) and he went through every single page with me. He immediately recognized a misdiagnosis by a previous physician. Also, rather than repeat every single blood test I had already had done multiple times, he only tested areas that had not been addressed. Other doctors did not do that - they repeated every test even though they too had full access to my records. It made me feel like Dr. Steimkampf saw me as a person rather than a patient with insurance. As further proof of his concerned, professional approach and caring nature, he has called me personally on a number of occasions with test results or to follow up to see if I had any questions after his nurse called with a prescription. I have NEVER had a… doctor call me personally. What a refreshing change! I feel I am in good, professional, compassionate hands with Dr. Steinkampf, and even though I only recently became his patient, I have already recommended him to a friend with concerns similar to mine. When it comes to physicians, Dr. Steinkampf rocks the nation!:)

Dr. Steinkamp seemed extremely knowledgable but had a terrible bedside manner. To be working with people that are dealing with a really difficult situation he needs to work to improve his bedside manner. Extremely rude with little empathy.
