Dr. Michael Alfonso Velasquez, DO

I went to see the doctor because of back pain, thought it might be kidney stones. He sent me to get an ultrasound, after I got the ultrasound, I called the doctors office for a follow-up appointment. At that time I also asked if the doctor could call in a prescription for pain pills, as I was suffering. The receptionist said she would tell the doctor. I heard nothing back from them. Later that afternoon, when I went to the drug store to pickup the prescription. They said the doctor had not called in anything. This was at 4:30 P.M. I called the doctor's office, they close at 5:00 P.M. there was no answer. I suffered all night. I called the doctor's office the next morning. The receptionist who answered, different than the one I spoke to the day before, after I explained my situation said that since it was a prescription for pain, the doctor could not call it in, it had to be written by him and he would not be in the office until Tuesday. I offered to meet him anywhere to get the… prescription, since they said he was visiting hospitals, rest homes, etc. They said they would call him and let me know. I got a call back about an hour later and said the doctor said I had to wait until Tuesday. I had already been in pain for days. A doctor that doesn't care about his patients in pain doesn't need more patients.

I've been a 5yr patient with Dr. Velasquez. Prior to him I struggled for years with continuous ailments & endless E.R. & Dr. visits. I have found Dr. Velasquez & his staff extremely courteous, understanding, respectful, accommodating, very family like office. I understand the difficulties in sharing an office with any Dr., especially an OB/GYN! However, both Doctors & their staff have worked together to make their patients(us) as best they can. I, as a patient, understand completely with the delay in appt timing. After all, Dr. Velasquez, as wonderful a Dr. as he is, is worth the wait. He is compassionate & attentive to his patients. Listens to our ailments and explains our best options. With verbal patient consultation & lab work, Dr. Velasquez prescribes what is suited best for us. Should the patient not feel or see a difference, labs may be 're taken or heard by the Dr. He makes every effort to tend to his patients in the best way possible. He does care for our well being. I… personally, highly recommend Dr. Velasquez & his staff to anyone who needs Dr. who works hard to help you. He has a new location, not shared with anyone. If there is a delay with appt timing, don't complain. I'm sure you would want the same attentiveness as anyone one else. It's called, listening. Again, Dr. Velasquez & his staff are WONDERFUL!

This office has been treating me for about 2 years. They have now stopped taking or accepting my insurance, which is fine. However, when I asked them about coverage of insurance...they said they did accept my insurance. I ended up paying for costs, which I could have avoided. I had blood work done, have called repeatedly for the results and they always tell me the same thing. Doctor is not in, he will have to call you. He does not. I am sure Dr. Velasquez is very busy, but that doesn't let me off the hook. I need my results. When I go into his office, there is lack of seating room because he is now sharing with another doctor and we line up in the hallway. We are given a 9am appointment, and we are not able to see him until almost noon. My gosh, by then it is a whole day wasted. I am aware of the fact that he is one, and we are many, but the scheduling can be done correctly with less wait time, I know I did this for a long time in another medical facility with multiple doctors. It is… skill not rocket science. We are here because we need medical services, and I know we have choices, but he needs to pay attention to the poor elderly patients waiting and waiting and sometimes no chairs available.

Dr Velasquez at first seemed like a caring doctor but quickly changed. He took on the role of being my specialist and primary doctor. He was very vague with his answers. When I told him about my pain to my abdomen he brushed it off and recommended I take prune juice. That brush off costed me a ER visit and over $600 in costs just to figure out what was really going on. To top if all off before I started going to him, his office stated he was in my policies network when in fact they werent. They tried billing me for their error and I refused. His assistants are nice but his office manager is rude and is not professional at all. You are better going with someone else.. Now that I am seeing another specialist they are like night and day. My new Dr explained to me in 5 minutes what Dr Velasquez lacked to explain in a yr of going to him.

Alamogordo has now been left without a Nephrologist since mid-2008.. We really miss Dr. Velasquez.
