Dr. Wilhelm grew up in Massachusetts. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Following the Marine Corps, Dr. Wilhelm attended dental school at the Washington University Medical Center, St. Louis, Missouri on a U.S. Navy Health Professions Scholarship.
He was selected for an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland. Following several hospital clinical and teaching assignments, he returned to Bethesda and was appointed Chairman of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Programs at both the Naval Hospital, Bethesda and Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Dr. Wilhelm was the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialty Advisor to the Surgeon General and personally treated members of Congress and the First Family of the United States.
