Dr. Mir Omar Ali, MD

A Smithfield pulmonologist has added a partner to his practice. Dr. Mir Mumtaz Ali is now practicing with his son, Dr. Mir Omar Ali, a pulmonologist and intensivist. Their offices are in Clayton at 8788 U.S. 70 W., and in Smithfield at 706-A Wilkins St. behind Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield. As pulmonologists, the father and son specialize in diagnosing and treating lung disease and illness. The younger Dr. Ali also specializes in treating critically ill patients.

"I have the latest training. He has the experience," Ali said of the partnership with his father. Until now, the older Dr. Ali, 60, has been the only pulmonologist practicing in Johnston County. Ali, 32, earned bachelor''s degrees in both medicine and surgery in 1999 from Deccan College of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, India. He completed a three-year residency in internal medicine at Finch University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School. Afterward, Ali completed four years of fellowships--first in critical care …medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School, and then in pulmonary medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital/New York University. Ali says he particularly likes working with patients in intensive care units. During his residency in critical care, he worked with critically ill patients in four hospitals, including Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center, Swedish Covenant Hospital and North Chicago Veterans Administration Hospital. Ali said he had always admired his father and liked the complex and highly respected specialty of pulmonology. "So many people need pulmonary care-smokers and those with asthma and chronic obstruction pulmonary disease, sleep breathing disorders and lung cancer for example," he added. Ali and his wife, Fatima, live in Raleigh and have four children.
