Mitchell J. (M.) Cohen, MD, is Associate Professor, Vice Chair for Education, and Director of the Pain Medicine Program in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Cohen%u2019s career and expertise are concentrated in medical education and treatment of patients with chronic pain. He was recruited to Jefferson Medical College in 1994 from the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he served as Director of the Adolf Meyer Pain Treatment Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Psychiatry Clerkship Director in the School of Medicine. Dr. Cohen is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Adult Psychiatry) with sub-specialty Board certification in Pain Medicine; he is also a diplomate of the American Board of Pain Medicine.

Dr Cohen has served on committees within major academic pain societies, including the American Pain Society and the American Academy of Pain Medicine. He has served on the DSM-IV Revision Task Force of the American Psychiatric Association, updating the %u201CSomatoform Disorders%u201D section, with special focus on pain disorders. He was appointed to the U.S. Medical Licensure Step II Test Development Committee by the NBME (National Board of Medical Examiners). He also served on the Pain Medicine Fellowship Advisory Committee of the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education).

Dr. Cohen has published on topics in pain medicine, general psychiatry, and medical education through scholarly papers, abstracts, chapters, and the book Pain Treatment Centers at A Crossroads: A Practical and Conceptual Reappraisal. Dr. Cohen has spoken widely on and medical education, the psychiatric aspects of chronic pain, pain medicine, and managing problem patients at academic meetings, public educational events, and in the media.

Dr Cohen has received numerous honors and awards, among them being named one of %u201CBaltimore%u2019s Best%u201D and a Philadelphia "Top Doctors" by Philadelphia magazine in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2011. He has been included in the respected Castle Connolly guide to Americas Top Doctors annually since 2005 and in US News and World Report%u2019s Top Doctors in 2011. Dr. Cohen%u2019s expertise in pain management, substance abuse and psychiatry has led to his appointment as team psychiatrist for the Philadelphia Phillies.
