Dr. Mitchell A Lomke, DDS

Dr. Mitchell Lomke was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1954. His family moved to this area in 1964, so he has lived in the Maryland area for over 40 years. Dr. Lomke, his wife and four children reside in Ashton, Maryland. His hobbies include skiing, coaching his children in baseball, basketball and soccer, working out at the gym and reading.
Dr. Lomke graduated from the University of Maryland in College Park, with a degree in zoology, in 1976 after only three years of undergraduate studies because he was in the special early admissions program. In 1979, he was awarded his Doctorate of Dental Surgery by the University of Maryland Dental School. Dr. Lomke's general practice residency was as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1979 to 1980. Since then, he has been in private practice. Dr. Lomke is a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD), American Dental Association, Maryland State Dental Association, Maryland State Dental Society, Southern State Dental Society, …Potomac Valley Study Club, the Washington Implant Study Club, the University of Maryland Dental School Dean’s Faculty- Clinical Instructor and the Maryland State Program (Donated Dental Services).
Dr. Lomke is a Recognized Course Provider (RCP) and has attained the level of Mastership in the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He appeared on Channel 9 TV to educate the public on “High Tech” dentistry. In addition to his general dentistry practice with a special interest in dental laser applications, he teaches other dentists and hygienists the safe and effective use of dental lasers and how to incorporate these techniques into patient care. Dr. Lomke has lectured on laser dentistry to other dentists around the United States as well as to international audiences at the annual ALD meetings.
Dr. Lomke is a member of the dean’s faculty at the University of Maryland Dental School where he is a lecturer and clinical instructor for dental laser technology. He provides an ALD-approved Standard Proficiency Course to other dentists and hygienists. This course is designed to properly and appropriately educate dentists and hygienists and provide a basic knowledge of all laser wavelengths, laser physics, history of laser science and laser safety as well as various clinical dental laser applications.
As a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, Dr. Lomke has achieved the level of AP (Advanced Proficiency) in Erbium and Diode wavelengths. A published author, he co-wrote an article with Dr. Eric Bornstein which appeared in the October 2003 edition of Dentistry Today. The article, “The Safe and Effective Use of Erbium Dental Lasers,” focused on using lasers in clinical practices. He currently uses Diode, Carbon Dioxide, Erbium and Argon wavelengths in everyday clinical applications.
Dr. Lomke is currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He is the current chair of the ALD Membership Committee and also serves on the Education Committee. Dr. Lomke currently serves on the Continuing Education Committee of the Maryland State Dental Association. He participates in an organization called DDS, or Donated Dental Services, to provide care for patients in Montgomery County, Maryland that are mentally handicapped and/or are in financial need as judged by the DDS organizational council.
Dr. Lomke has conducted several hands-on introductory laser courses with general practice residents and their faculty instructors at the University of Maryland Dental School. He is a featured speaker at the Academy of Laser Dentistry annual conferences. Dr. Lomke is a consultant to many dental companies concerning hi tech dentistry.
Dr. Lomke’s article on “Clinical Application of Dental Lasers” appeared in the Jan/Feb ’09 issue of the Academy of General Dentistry’s magazine General Dentistry.
