Dr. Mufaddal Mustafa Gombera, MD

I had bilateral hip arthroscopy surgery with Dr. Gombera in 2021. They were incomplete and not thorough in nature. My left leg felt remarkably worse than it did pre-op. I now require revision surgery after re tearing both labrums in less than 5 months. This was due to improper cam reduction, loose sutures, damage to my femoral head, and micro instability as stated by my new surgeon. I made complaints throughout the recovery period, but I was told they were common and would improve over time. I knew something was wrong so I saught a second opinion. This was even after having bilateral MRIs and X-rays post op and they came back negative claiming there was no damage and the surgery was successful. My goal of this review is not to trash doctor Gombera but to be open and honest with the experience I had with him as my care provider. When I provided an update to him after finding out I needed revision surgery the response I was given didn't show concern for my current status or what may… have gone wrong with his surgery. His response "That being said, the primary reason for failure of a hip arthroscopy is inadequate resection of the cam lesion. So I take a lot of care during surgery to ensure a perfect resection. I have attached your x-rays so you may see what your impingement looked like before and after surgery. Perhaps your surgeon can help you identify this better as well. " He didn't ask to see the doctors notes or investigate my conditions further. I was given a general response claiming he does his best. My experience leading up to the surgeries was not the best either. Doctor Gombera's staff waited until the day before to put in the request for the surgeries to be approved by my insurance. Insurance providers require more than one day's notice before approving a surgery and sometimes it can take up to two weeks. After finding out that my insurance declined the claim because the incorrect information ( they sent the notes for the wrong hip) was put in for my hips the day before my surgery. I had to frantically get a hold of Dr Gombera so he could do a peer-to-peer which I'm grateful he was able to do because my family and I had already made plans to take off from work to take care of me during my recovery. Not knowing whether or not I would be able to have my surgery because of mistakes by his office was very stressful leading up to the procedure. My current physician put in the claims 3 weeks in advance and my insurance approved the request without issues. Waking up from my surgery by Dr Gombera I was in so much pain even after they gave me a drug cocktail. The recovery doctor said that the pain medication I was given reached its safe limit and they would have to put me back to sleep until my pain subsided so I was given ketamine. Months after surgery, consistent pt, and steroid injections I could not sit for more than 30 mins, walk, jog, or stand without constant pain. My current care provider is Dr Joshua Harris of Houston Methodist. He is highly regarded and known as the best doctor for hip arthroscopy surgery in Texas. I cannot recommend him enough. Before my surgery he took CT scans to gain insight on the complete morphology of my hips to ensure 100% correction of my hip impingement. Julia Williams his PA is awesome and is always timely and detailed when answering any questions in regards to my health. Dr Harris specializes in hip arthroscopy surgery. I am not the first person that he has had to perform a revision surgery under previous surgeries performed by Dr. Gombera. I think that should alone speak for itself. Dr Gombera has a lot of great reviews stating he is a great care provider. I am sure he was able to solve a lot of patients issues. I cannot speak to his abilities in regards to knee or shoulder surgeries. However, when it comes to my experience with him as my care provider I can 100% not recommend him to anyone with hip impingement. If my review saves 1 person from having to go through the pain and frustration that I had to go through and they seek another doctor, than it was worth it. Still, I hope my case brings Dr. Gombera to review and improve his methods for his future patients
