Hello, and welcome to my practice! My name is Dr. Muhammad Zeshan AKA Dr. Z as many of my patients and clients call me. 

I am a Harvard-trained psychiatrist specializing in infant, child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry here at Inside Out, my private practice in Princeton, New Jersey. I also serve as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark.

My journey began in Pakistan, where I spent 12 years working at my father’s restaurant before pursuing a career in medicine. My interest in child psychiatry was sparked by reading the works of Dr. Haim Ginott, an American psychologist. His insights into the importance of empathically listening to children, appreciating their efforts, and providing age-appropriate choices profoundly influenced me during my medical school years.

What most people don’t know about my journey is that while working as a waiter in my dad’s …restaurant in Pakistan, I witnessed the toll of neglecting self-care on his health, teaching me to establish boundaries, prioritize self-care, and embrace education; values my dad couldn’t fully appreciate. In 2019 at the young age of 58, his unexpected passing prompted me to overcome guilt, actualizing the seed he planted to boldly seize opportunities to learn and grow together, and reminds me that sometimes it’s not about us, it’s about the people we serve.

As the only infant and toddler-trained psychiatrist in New Jersey, I bring unique specialization in infant and toddler mental health to our practice, addressing the intricate needs of young children and their families by focusing on the whole child.
