Dr. Muithi Mwangangi Mwanthi, MD

I was very disappointed in him my first visit but decided to be patient and give him a fair chance. After my third visit it was plain to me that this doctor treats lab results rather than people. You probably know the type. I found him to be competent but unmotivated to really help me; condescending, dismissive, and overall unaccommodating. He did not improve my chronic condition at all in the six months I hung in there with him, which I think was plenty long enough. There are many dermatologists to choose from. I don't recommend this one and am confident that he doesn't care what I think one bit. Check out my other reviews. I rarely give a bad one. This man is the epitome of what's wrong with western medicine.

I recently saw Dr. Mwanthi and found him to be very knowledgeable and professional. In fact, he was more thorough and provided more information than other Drs. I had seen for my condition. He was on time and his office staff was efficient. I would without hesitation recommend this Dr. to anyone needing to see a dermatologist.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Mwanthi for two years. He always gets me in fast when I have a skin issue and makes sure that all my concerns are addressed.

My 7 & 8 year old both saw Dr. Mwanthi. He was very kind and patient with them. Would recommend highly!

I came to Dr. Mwanthi because I had switched insurance and needed to get refills for the prescriptions I was already on. I had orginally gone to a dermatologist because of acne from masks. When I visited him, my skin had been great and I TOLD HIM THIS. All I wanted was refills for what I was already taking. Instead, he ignored all I had to say, talked down to me, and prescribed me like 5 medications. I tried to get clarifications on when and how to take all this medicine and I am honestly still very confused. Overall he is a very disrespectful individual and completely ignored my wishes as a client. I felt bad for who I believe to be the student that was with him. The rest of the staff was great and bless their hearts for working with this man who really needs to work on his interpersonal skills.

For the past five years, I had a spot on my face. Never hurt or nothing, just there so my regular doctor referred me to the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Dermatology department in St. Louis, Missouri. I am two hours away from the hospital but decided to go anyways. I had no idea who my doctor would be or anything like that. I get there, all the nurses was great. A nurse took me to a room, room 19 to be exact and passed me off to another nurse and she was the best part about the visit. I wish I gotten her name but she was really nice. Anyways, after putting information in the computer, she said that the doctor would like all his patients to wear a gown. The spot is on my face, not anywhere else on my body. She then lowered her voice and said that most people dont change into a gown and that it was up to me. She then said the doctor would be in soon. A few minutes later, a younger guy knocked on the door and entered. He said he was a resident working under Dr. Mwanthi. This guy was… really nice, asked questions about my spot. I had a face mask on which the resident asked me to lower so he could see the said spot. I had my mask still connected by my ears but it was on my chin instead of my mouth/nose area. He looked at it and got more information about the spot. He said for me to stay just like that, he would go get the doctor. A couple minutes later, the resident knocked and open the door with Dr. Mwanthi behind him. Dr. Mwanthi saw that my masked was lowered and refused to entered the room. He started screaming at me from the hallway to put my mask back up even though the resident told me to keep it like that. I put the mask by over my mouth/nose. Dr. Mwanthi then entered the room and starts to scream at me again. He screams at me saying that I have to keep my mask on and not to speak to him if my masked is lowered. The spot on my face is right by my nose so in order for him to even look at it, my masked would have to be lowered. He didn't like that. He finally told me to lower the mask and ask if he could poke the spot with a q-tip. I shook my head yes since I can't talk to the doctor. He went and got a q-tip but before he started, he screamed again that if it starts hurting, "dont you dare say anything to me" instead to hit his arm. It didn't hurt, after he was done, he screams once again very loudly to put my mask back on. As he was leaving, he told me that I need to wear my face back at all times including when I am by myself. I told him that I live two hours away, and we have different rules then he is living under. I told him while I am here, I am wearing my mask but once I get in the car, it is going off. He didn't like that, he stormed out of the room and I never seen him again. The resident who witness all of this stayed and told me that the doctor wanted me to come back next month for a ultrasound of my face. After dealing with this sad poor excuse of not just a doctor, but he is a sad poor excuse of a human, I will not be getting a ultrasound done by him nor anyone else up at Barnes-Jewish. He is a disgrace to all doctors everywhere and he should have his licenses revoked. DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t know why this incompetent and disrespectful man is allowed to practice medicine. I saw him about 2 years ago and he spent barely 10 minutes with me and never addressed my questions or concerns. He was demeaning and didn’t give me ANY treatment to go home with. He diagnosed me with a type of inflammatory skin disease and he told me to buy over the counter Panoxyl and try that. Seriously?! I could of gone on google and seen that and not spent so much to see this man. 2 years later and it has gotten so much worse and could of probably been prevented if he just did his job as a health care provider. And surprisingly enough the OTC cleanser did nothing! Wow shocker

I wish I would've seen these reviews before I went. I have pretty bad cystic acne and wanted to get into a regular treatment. My wedding was 6 months in the future, but I was clear I did not want just an easy fix for the wedding, I wanted a sustainable treatment to clear my face. He entered the room, never even looked at my face and skin problems (acne people will know the different types of acne require COMPLETELY different treatments). He threw me a sheet with a bunch of treatments and told me to "pick one". I said I am not a doctor and therefore have no idea which would be more suitable for my type of skin. I haven't had a chance to read up on any of these. He said it's up to me so I should choose. After this he started being incredibly condescending and dismissive. I asked if the treatments would have a side effect that could affect pregnancy since we wanted to start trying after the wedding. He proceeded to tell me how I "could be married without being pregnant" like I'm some sort… of idiot. I'm a 30 year old woman with a B.S. and an MBA degree. I don't know why I stayed, probably because it had been so hard to get an appointment anywhere. But I asked him to check me for malignant moles, given that my family always has to take moles off at the doctor because they can turn into skin cancer. All of my family has this problem, and I'd never in my life checked so I asked him if he could check. He gave me a once over look and said i didn't have anything. I asked him to check a couple that were literally black and he hadn't even seen them and was annoyed and asking me why I keep asking this, if I didn't have this issue before. I understand why some people would leave crying, I really do. This was demeaning and horrible. He shouldn't be able to treat anyone else. Ever. Oh also the stuff he recommended was $300 on top of the visit which was $600 after insurance. He was in my network. Needless to say, my acne didn't clear up with this random treatment I chose myself.

Tl;dr: Do NOT see this physician. He prescribed daily steroids, ignoring my acne concerns (and the associated cancer risk), leading to the worst skin I've ever had, and refused to admit he'd made a mistake until I pushed him. I went in to see Dr. Mwanthi because I had been worried about closed comedones (whiteheads). I told him I had eczema and it was well-controlled. He prescribed me a treatment for comedones as well as corticosteroids for the eczema. He told me, even though it was well-controlled, to apply corticosteroids to my face every day in order to suppress the eczema. Four months later, my skin looked so bad, I was crying in our appointment. I had been applying both treatments daily, and my face erupted - I had massive cystic acne (which I had never had prior) and my eczema was all over my face. I went to see him again and he outright denied all the claims I had made (which I had researched on reputable scientific journals), telling me that there's no way anything he… prescribed could have that effect. Afterwards, he did admit that the steroids can cause acne and told me to stop everything. I've been nursing my skin back to health for almost 6 months, and I still have scarring and pigmentation due to the steroids he provided. My skin is still much worse than it was before I saw him. I also spoke to another derm who said that the daily dose of steroids was very damaging to my skin, and drastically increased my risk of melanoma (for no reason, as my eczema had been controlled).
