Dr. Nancy F Kahn, MD

Dr. Kahn can't care about her patients any less. She had the worst bedside manner I have ever experienced. She could not properly address my questions, and you can tell she does not even care to do so. She picked up her personal phone while seeing patients without any explanation. She had no common sense when telling you that you do not need any treatment for something that really bothered you for a long time. She was rude, cold, unpleasant and in my eyes not qualified for her job at all. My advice: do not waste your time and money with her.

a real disgrace to medicine

I gave this doctor multiple chances. However, Dr. Kahn does NOT listen and constantly dismisses patient's health concerns. Dr. Kahn sits at her computer typing the majority of the visit and spends 3 minutes on an exam with no suggestions or medical advice. As I explained the reason for my visit, she shushed me and began to talk over me NEVER meeting my health needs. Worst doctor in all my years.

Severely misdiagnosed me, I wound up in the hospital due to her improper instructions.

dr kahn did not ask for consent before performing a breast exam, sneezed into her hands and did not wash them, and neglected to tell me that I had a UTI and high cholesterol (I had to discover this myself by looking at my online portal test results). steer clear.

It's six years later, and I am still angered by how I was treated by Dr. Kahn. I saw Dr. Kahn in 2013 for an uncomplicated UTI, for which she prescribed Cipro. I asked whether Cipro had any side effects, and she said there were none. I got home, did my research, saw that among other things, Cipro had a black box warning on it for ruptured tendons, and called her to ask to be given something else. She was extremely unhappy about having her authority questioned and was not willing to listen to my concerns. In 2016, the FDA advised restricting Cipro for uncomplicated UTIs. I like to think that I saw that one coming. In addition to being dismissive, Dr. Kahn was 1.5 hours late for the appointment and didn't apologize. In discussing a weight loss method, she advised that I "stop eating." I assumed that she was joking, but it turns out she wasn't, and she claimed that this finding had "something to do with proteins." I asked whether she could refer me to the scientific journal article… that included this finding (I have a PhD in Chemistry and research proteins), and she said that she didn't know where it was published. To add insult to injury, I was billed $400 for this charade. Steer clear of this woman and her ineptitude.

After my initial physical with Dr. Kahn she told me my bad cholesterol was high, but my good cholesterol was high too and then quickly moved on. I found that odd so I brought the subject back to my cholesterol and what I should do about lowering it but she wasn't interested and changed the subject. So I asked her about diet and she said, "don't eat cheese" and that was that. When I pressed her for more information she said, "We don't know what to do with people like you". I'm guessing she was speaking for all doctors? I'm not sure, but she said something similar when I went to see her during one of my flare ups (so she could see me at my worst) and boy, what a bad idea. I have documented chronic illnesses that can cause severe pain and all Dr. Kahn could focus on was the fact that I was crying which she assumed was depression. Without asking me one question she told me I needed to do something about my depression. Valid and true, but I wasn't crying because of depression and told her… so. I told her I was in pain and needed a plan to deal with the flare ups when she said, "Well, we don't know how to help people like you." So, if you're not in perfect health I suggest looking elsewhere for a GP because Dr. Kahn comes across as just waiting for retirement.

While Nancy Kahn may in fact be a wonderful doctor, but the experience of dealing with her assistant actually made me switch doctors. From the miscoding of a bill so that hours were spent dealing with the hospital and insurance to straighten it out, to her inability to use my correct email address so I could gain access to my Columbia health portal, her ineptitude was a deal-breaker. I think it can't be understated how important the person sitting in the chair who you deal with before seeing the doctor is to set up your experience with efficiency and follow-through. Neither of those things were available with Nancy Kahn's office. In a city like New York, there's no excuse for a shoddy front office when there are really so many choices in healthcare. And shame on Columbia Medical for not recognizing that and doing something about it.
