Dr. Nancy Joan Keck, MD

My husband and I took our first born son to see Dr. Keck 16 years ago at the urging of our pediatrician. The process sounds much like others experienced as far as types of tests done. When it was all said and done she had no difficulty in giving us the news, that our son had autistic characteristics and he would always be behind his peers in school. My husband cried and I sat there in shock. The delivery of the diagnosis was exceedingly insensitive. Poor bedside manner they call it at a particularly vulnerable time. But the years toughen you up a bit and new dreams and hopes develop pertaining to your precious child. Now, I have the luxury of hindsight and I am truly amazed at the accuracy of Dr. Keck's diagnosis and report. "How did she know?" I would say to my husband. She was right and the fact that she was allowed us to get all of the services our boy needed to help him get to where he is today.

I don't often write reviews but I feel this is necessary especially after reading near-similar reviews within this site. While I understand Dr. Keck has over 35 years of experience it baffles me as a 10+ yr Psychologist that she is allowed to continue to practice. I would NEVER treat anyone in a way that we were treated during this visit. Her approach is archaic and poor at best. She walked into the room and pulled a few toys out of a bag laying them on the floor for our child to play with. (If you read further comments you will see a repetitive theme). Our child grabbed a few of the items, Dr Keck jotted down a few notes and quickly gathered everything back up again. She repeated this practice with a few more items, expecting the child to know what exactly to do with each item and command given, quickly snatching up the items if the child didn't perform appropriately. This lasted for roughly 1/2 hour to 45 minutes at best. We were then ushered to a group where we had no… complaints about the personality and attitude of the group. They were kind and far more personable than Dr. Keck. After another short "play" period of an hour or so we were moved once again to our starting room. As we sat down and Dr. Keck returned she began to deliver us her "diagnosis". (Again, please note similar/pattern diagnosis within additional comments) She felt our child may have genetic issues along with Dr. Keck's seeming go-to diagnosis of Autism. Reading other reviews solidified my hypothesis that Dr. Keck works with a "cut-and-paste approach" with the appearance of just churning clients through the system. As a professional in the Hospital/Psychiatric world, this utterly shocked me. It took every ounce of professionalism to not react to this absurd diagnosis. It was quite apparent, especially after reading very similar remarks here as mentioned, that Dr. Keck lacks the professional courtesy that should be allowed to patients. A 2.5 hr diagnosis is nowhere NEAR the amount of time required to make such accusations and assumptions. To even speak that our child had a genetic defect was appalling and caused traumatic stress to my wife and family. And from the sound of it, this has happened repeatedly. I have worked with individuals of all shapes and sizes - NEVER would I treat them as we were treated by Dr. Keck. A diagnosis as severe as the one stated takes months of research and study, not 30 minutes. It sickens me as a professional that someone such as Dr. Keck is allowed to continue to practice. My hope in writing this is that others will see these reviews and not make the same mistake we did by bringing our child to her. And I strongly recommend anyone that has received diagnosis from Dr. Keck please seek a second and third opinion. I would also implore anyone from the Medical Review Board to please heavily review and critique Dr. Keck's approach and practice. I do apologize if some points made here took on bits of frustration. Again, I am doing my best to remain professional but something MUST be said by the lack of professionalism by Dr. Keck.

My husband and I were very disappointed with the lack of professionalism of Dr. Keck and her team. We felt rushed, and their diagnosis made no sense to us. We went on to get a second opinion from two more doctors, both of whom disagreed with Dr. Keck.

So we took our son for his one year follow up. Our first visit there we didn't know any better we were so overwhelmed and devastated by our sons diagnosis we didn't know what to say or think. This time I brought my sons therapists with. Why do they stick a child that can be overwhelmed by noise and chaos in a tiny room with three therapists talking all at once? A total of 7 people in a room the size of a bathroom. As soon as they would give my son a toy they would take it away. He was crying. One therapist asked me does he always cry? I said he is three you keep teasing him with toys you are causing this. They said he has the comprehension of a 14 mo old. My three old is starting to read can count to 30 and in multiples of five.. Spending an hour with three strangers in a loud tiny room does not allow for a true reflection of ones child.. I am looking for a new specialist!

I cannot believe I almost canceled this appointment after reading the reviews here. Anyway, we took our son to Dr Keck (and team); we were accepted even earlier, the staff were polite. Both the doctor and the therapists who evaluated my son were very nice, friendly people, obviously professionals. I've dealt with therapists recently, with doctors all my life, so I should know. They took their time to observe/ examine my little one and then share their observations with us, the doctor very tactfully explained why she'd give ... Dx to my son. All questions answered, advice given, possibilities discussed, papers with lots of resources given. Three hours, no less.

I brought my son to see Dr Keck at 2.5 when I was concerned about his speech delay. He was suspected of having apraxia (which he was officially diagnosed with a month after seeing Dr Keck). She immediately diagnosed him with autism. Now, after a second and third opinion and hundreds of speech therapy sessions, my son is, who is now almost 4 years old, is just about age appropriate with speech. Although he still has apraxia and is not resolved yet, he has made great strides and is well on his way to being resolved. Please remember that not all children with speech delays have autism. Dr Keck seems to think this. A lot of children with apraxia mimic the characteristics of autism. Some do have autism, some have autism and apraxia and some just have apraxia. Please do not take your child to see Dr Keck. I give her zero stars.

Dr. Keck has treated both of my sons. I was crushed to receive the diagnosis that my younger son was on the autistic spectrum. Crushed! But I'm pretty sure that it wasn't Dr, Keck's fault. Yes she delivered bad news and I was devastated. She provided care for my son that took him from his initial full blown autism to high functioning yet still on the spectrum. Without her help, my son might still be non-verbal She saw my other son and provided experts that assessed his sky high IQ as well as his ADHD. And helped me help him manage himself. She cares and connects with my children. I have always been able to reach her easily with any concerns. She is a well respected expert in her field and I trust her completely.

If you care about your son/daughter, go somewhere else.

Do not take your child to see Dr. Keck. She gives any child who comes to see her an Autistic label if they have any behaviors that fall on the spectrum. If your child has a speech day I am 100 percent certain your child will leave the office with an Autistic Label. She overgeneralizes how she labels children. As a special education teacher who works with Autistic children I am certain she should not be practicing medicene. I cannot believe I followed a recommendation to take my child to this practice. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CHILD TO THIS DOCTOR. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I give this practice zero stars.

I brought my son to see Dr. Keck when I was concerned about his speech delay at 2.5 years old. A speech therapist, occupational therapist and a social worker all evaluated my son for 2 hours while they asked me questions about his birth, milestones, etc. We were then brought into a different room where we waited 30 minutes for Dr Keck to arrive. She brought a small bag of toys, observed my son, asked me a few questions and then sat back in her chair and proceeded to tell me that she is diagnosing my son with autism. Before she said anything else, she said our chances of having another child with autism was 50 % and that a lot of marriages fall apart because of this diagnosis. I was completely shocked that she said that and was even more shocked that she didn't explain any of the results from the CARS test that she had performed on my son. I had to ask her the reasons why. I decided to take my son to see 2 additional developmental pediatricians for a second and third opinion. Both,… independent of each other, said that my son does not have autism but rather a severe case of apraxia which is causing some delays in other areas. They both had given me numerous resources for therapists they utilize for their patients with this diagnosis and after just 3 months of therapy, my son has made tremendous progress. I highly recommend you receive a second opinion if your son or daughter was diagnosed with autism by Dr. Keck. A lot of therapists my son has seen since then have told me that Dr. Keck tends to over diagnose children with autism when they simply have a speech delay, apraxia, etc.
