Dr. Nathaniel Arthur Cleaveland, DO

After cataract surgery Dr. Nathaniel Cleaveland said I needed YAG Laser surgery for PCO. I had good clear vision before the YAG Laser surgery. Now have clouded, diminished and very unsatisfactory vision after the YAG Laser surgery. Before surgery I asked Dr. Cleaveland about possible risks and complications. He stated there could be "some additional floaters that should dissipate in a few days." He discussed no other risks or complications. I reported the cloudy vision and returned for another eye exam. Dr. Cleaveland said that Posterior Vitreous Detachment caused the clouds in my vision. He tried to explain it as a pre-existing condition common as we age. Moreover, he tried to convince me, "You can just see it [clouds] better now after [YAG laser] surgery." Really? Without any doubt or reservation, I am 100% certain these clouds now present in my vision did not exist prior to YAG laser surgery. Yes, I had some occasional fine hair-like floaters like anyone my age, but not the… large clouds of matter I now have diminishing my vision clarity after the YAG Laser surgery. Following this last visit to Dr. Cleaveland and his dubious explanation, I researched Posterior Vitreous Detachment and YAG Laser surgery. According to several medical and government publications, misdirected or excessive laser energy in YAG Laser surgery may cause complications including Posterior Vitreous Detachment. Further, I discovered there are eye conditions - some I have - which increase the risks of complications, including detachment. These risks and complications, other than "floaters" mentioned above, were not discussed or disclosed in my conversations with Dr. Cleaveland. Bottom Line: -YAG Laser surgery provided no discernable vision improvement and my vision is actually worse now. -Dr. Cleaveland failed to disclose and discuss significant risks and possible complications before surgery. -In the end, I felt that Dr. Cleaveland was more interested in scheduling billable services than my vision health and informed consent.
