Dr. Neal Jun Shikuma, MD

The reassurance is because I feel that my care is in competent and knowledgeable hands. Just had my first visit and was not hurried through, was listened to and had my questions answered. I also learned a few things that were, are helpful. I'm looking forward to an accurate diagnosis and well being.

Found him to be honest, and what I like the best is the fact that he explains in language that you can understand. Non judgemental and very down to earth. Fun sense of humor!!

The front office staff at the Waimea office are basically incompetent. Very long waits for no reason, appointments rescheduled due to their lack of preparation or in one case their forgetting to book it in the computer despite giving me an appointment card. I don't think they've ever seen a professional manager.

I was a bit hesitant to see Dr. Shikuma after reading some reviews that were less than positive. I am pleased to say that he was extremely kind and willing to listen to me, as well as answering all of my questions regarding my care. If you are in need of a cardiac physician who is willing to treat you like he would his own family member, than come and see Dr. Shikuma. You will be happy you did. Thank you Dr. Shikuma for being such a wonderful doctor!!!!

Dr. Shikuma should have his license revoked. He was horrendously cruel to my elderly mother. He is a pompous jerk. Has a great opinion of himself and nothing to offer our local community. I have spoken to four other patients who have had the same awful experience with him. I have spoken to a staff member who said he is difficult to work for. She has been driven to tears. She also said a long term patient recently left their office yelling "f___ you!" after he insulted her for the last time. Do yourself a favor and look for a doctor who knows how to communicate well and treats patients with dignity & respect.

I wish I could give 5 stars or more. Dr. Shikuma is an exceptional Doctor in every way. We are so fortunate to have him in Hawaii. After 4 Cardiologists significantly misdiagnosed my cardiac condition, I was referred to him by someone else whose life saved by Dr. Shikuma - after he also was misdiagnosed by other Doctors in Hawaii. Dr. Shimkuma takes the time to listen and runs proper tests to diagnose. The wait time is longer, because he is so good. I would wait all weekend or even a week to be able to see Dr. Shikuma. I'd rather not have more patents for him and more competition to see him, but I had to write a review when I noticed the best Doctor I have ever seen in my life for any reason, had faulty negative reviews. My life will be longer because of his proper diagnosis and innovative treatment.

DR. Neal Shikuma is an exceptional Cardiologist. He is the best Doctor I have ever visited. He takes the time to really discuss what is wrong. He knew about my complicated genetic problem when dozens of other Doctors missed it. He really cares. There is a wait, but worth every minute to wait for the greatest Doctor. The State of Hawaii is very lucky that we have such an amazing Cardiologist.

To impatient patient !!!!can't believe your review ?? ALL of our time is precious MINE AS WELL AS YOURS but how improtant is YOUR LIFE !!!!!! I moved here full time in 05 had a double bypass on oahu in 1992 and IN 20yrs time i guess had taken its toll on the graff. i was having some minor symptoms like the ones i had in 92 just before my heart attack , i went to my "PCP " Doctor Dr Duerler of mango medical , explained my symptoms and he went into action took a ekg and blood contacted my cardio dock on oahu. after a hr he called me and said he set up an appointment with DR. Shikuma THAT DAY . And explained it might be a wait, as i was a last minute app., but after explaining to the doc. he told him to have me come in right away . i drove over to his office and it was busy but his staff could not of been more courtious and had no problem waiting, after failed stress test he took action to get me over to oahu to have a angio [ Dr L Derbus ] to determine what needed to… be done . Im stable now and am SOOOO GLAD that the doctor took xtra time to look after my needs , AFTER 20 YRS with the doc on oahu we are SOOOOO LUCKY to have such a class act and his staff in our remote area. BE GREATFULL !!!! THANKS AGAIN TO DOCTOR SHIKUMA AND HIS STAFF both here and on oahu

When reading the other reviews on Dr. Shikuma, it's like reading about a different person! I have nothing but positive experiences with Dr. Shikuma, both as a doctor and a person. He is thorough, takes his time, runs the necessary tests and follows up. He is polite and interested in the patient and sees her/him as a whole person. I do agree that his office staff could use some courses in running an office efficiently, keeping times and records, but that is after all, another story! I feel very fortunate to have come to Dr. Shikuma and he probably saved my life. Regarding saving lives: keep in mind that sometimes when Dr. Shikuma is running late, it's because he is saving someone's life. Next time it could be you or me...

scheduling leaves less to be desired only to sit in the office for more than nearly two hours (average for the kamuela office) and then another 45 minutes in the patient room to be seen by Dr. Shikuma for all of 5 minutes. My time is precious they should figure out how to schedule better so the wait is not so long and frustrating. Does he wonder why the pressures up and the heart rate is fast?
