Dr. Nelly Mauras, MD

am writing this review as a concerned parent because families deserve to know how this physician treats patients and parents before trusting her with their child’s care. My experience with Dr. Nelly Mauras was deeply disappointing and distressing. From the start, communication felt one-sided and dismissive. During appointments, I was repeatedly cut off while trying to ask questions or explain concerns about my child’s health. It was clear that once she had decided on her position, further discussion was not welcome. Questions were interrupted, redirected, or shut down, leaving no real opportunity for understanding or collaboration. The tone used during these visits was often impatient, sarcastic, and condescending. Rather than explaining complex medical issues in a calm and respectful way, interactions felt rushed and dismissive. As a parent advocating for a medically complex child, this was extremely upsetting. Asking questions should never feel like an inconvenience or an act of… defiance. What makes this especially troubling is that my son has a serious bone disease and is already navigating significant medical challenges. He was present during part of one visit and was visibly affected by how I was spoken to. After the appointment, he was saddened by the way the doctor treated his mother. No child should leave a medical visit emotionally impacted because of how a physician communicates with a parent. At one point during our care, Dr. Mauras expressed frustration and advised that we seek care with another provider. She stated that her primary responsibilities include research and indicated that she did not have the availability required to address our concerns. Shortly thereafter, my son’s care was transitioned to another clinician. Being informed that a physician does not have sufficient time to manage the care of a child with a serious medical condition is deeply concerning and not reflective of patient-centered pediatric care. I am also saddened by the lack of intervention or support from Nemours. Nemours presents itself as an institution that upholds high standards of compassionate, family-centered care. In our experience, those standards were not upheld. I made efforts to seek assistance and accountability through appropriate channels, yet felt unsupported as a parent trying to advocate for my child. Parents should understand that this physician does not practice collaborative care. If you are a parent who asks questions, wants clear explanations, or expects respectful communication, you may feel dismissed or spoken down to. Authority is prioritized over partnership, and parental advocacy does not appear to be valued. This review is not written lightly. It is written because patients and parents have rights — the right to ask questions, the right to understand medical decisions, and the right to be treated with dignity and respect. Families dealing with complex medical conditions need physicians who listen, communicate thoughtfully, and recognize the importance of parental involvement. Due to the manner in which we were treated and the repeated dismissal of my son’s medical needs, I am pursuing formal avenues of review, including reporting this experience to appropriate oversight bodies. I believe it is important for concerns about patient care, communication, and professional conduct to be documented and reviewed so that other families do not experience the same treatment.
