What is a neurologist?

Neurologists are doctors whose specialty focuses on the brain and the entire nervous system. The conditions a neurologist treats go beyond brain issues such as Alzheimer’s disease and include such things as nerve pain, tremors and multiple sclerosis, among many other disorders.

Within the medical specialty of neurology, there's a wide variety of subspecialties, too. Certain neurologists may be experts on specific neurological conditions, such as movement disorders, stroke, neuromuscular disease or epilepsy. There are behavioral neurologists and neuropsychiatrists who explore the link between problems with the brain and how they relate to behavior. In addition, pediatric neurologists focus on disorders that are common in children.
