Dr. Spigland received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her M.D. degree from New York Medical College. She completed her General surgery residency at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and her Pediatric surgical fellowship at St. Justine Children's Hospital in Montreal, Canada in 1989. She subsequently joined the surgical faculty of the UMDNJ -Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 1995, she relocated to New York City and joined the surgical staff of the New York Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell Campus.

Dr. Spigland can be very blunt and rude at times, even with parents whose children are facing life threatening surgeries. lacked empathy. A doctor on a team suggested a procedure and this information was shared with her and she berated the patient's parents for sharing

My 3 month old son needed to have a perianal abscess surgically drained. His pediatrician expressed concern that he may have a fistula which would have caused the abscess. Dr. Spigland agreed to drain the abscess, look for the fistula and remove it if present. Dr. Spigland drained the abscess and confirmed there was no fistula. Approximately 2 weeks later, the perianal abscess returned in the same exact location as the previous one. I took my son to another hospital where the surgeon removed the fistula that was overlooked and caused another painful perinanal abscess, which resulted in my 3 month old son to need another surgery in the same location as the first 2 weeks later. UNACCEPTABLE!

Dr. Spigland is nothing short of a miracle doctor. She has tremendous knowledge and is incredibly dedicated and giving to her patients. She saved our baby's life more than once and gave us hope when other doctors told us there was none. Our baby is now a thriving, happy, healthy one year old and we cannot thank Dr. Spigland enough.
