Pros: Seemed, at first, to truly care and not be all about the money. Intelligent guy, not boring. Good sense of humor. Cons: 1) His Psychology Today profile has a payment scale that is much less than what he really charges. 2) He would sometimes act impatient and annoyed when my emotions were not up to speed with my intellect (doesn't seem to understand that if patients understood at an emotional level, what they do at an intellectual level, he would be out of a job). 3) Mixed up basic facts about things that I told him which made me feel like he had not been listening (I understand how this could happen but might I suggest that when a patient leaves your office, take notes and read them before your next session. It's understandable that it may seem like minutiae to you but for the poor sap across from you, pouring his/her heart out to a virtual stranger, it feels very important). 4) (and this is a biggie!) He did not follow ethical guidelines with regard to termination of my… therapy. Until now I had no idea how bad that is. When a person goes to a therapist, at the very least they should be able to expect not to be rejected or abandoned. At the very least a therapist should respect professional protocol with regard to the termination of therapy. Protocol says there should be honest dialogue about it and some time and preparation for it. This therapist terminated my therapy at the end of a session, abruptly and without warning. When I contacted him to try and talk about it afterward, he seemed to be clueless about why I was upset. He even put the responsibility on me for it. Come on Doc, just because a person is in a bad place in life, doesn't give you the right to make it worse. People reach out to you because they need someone to be able to talk to and trust. Your therapeutic training, standard of care and common code of ethics has taught you how to properly terminate therapy. It has placed a great deal of importance on this part of the therapeutic process, and for good reason. It is unconscionable to terminate therapy out of accordance with your training. Having a broke patient does not preclude you from following the professional standards of your industry with regard to termination of therapy. There is no excuse for that.
