Been going to Dr. Lavin for years. He's very knowledgeable but the wait times are terrible (usually about 45-50min -- they double and tripple book apt times) and the office staff pretty jaded. Plus, he's always trying to up-sell us on "growth" pills (I googled them - no evidence to support their effectiveness) or ultrasounds (both provided by his office). If he weren't the only reasonably close option for us, we would have gone elsewhere long ago.

My father had an appointment with Dr. Lavin last week. We are very upset and disgusted with the poor bedside manner this doctor showed us during our initial consultation(10 minutes or less). I had brought my father to see Dr. Lavin because my uncle had recommended him, as he saved my uncle's life. My father was recently diagnosed with ALS and he was referred to go see Dr. Lavin. I was skeptical about bringing my father to see this doctor as I couldn't see how this doctor, an endocrinologist can help my father with a neurological disease. However, I kept an open mind and brought my father to see Dr. Lavin. In his office, I explained to him why we are there. My father does not speak English well and I am his interpreter. My father is very conservative, traditional, and he can be stoic. When the doctor asked my father how he was feeling, my father stated "okay". I know for a fact my father feels terrible but he was just being facetious when he said he's feeling okay. I told the… doctor that my father feels terrible. I asked the doctor, "how do you think one would feel if they have this disease?". I was not trying to be offensive. However, I truly believe that Dr. Lavin took this comment personally and out of hand. A minute later after what I said, Dr. Lavin looked at me and said, "I was very rude, I should be ashamed of myself, I should be ashamed to be his son. If I asked your dad how he was feeling, you don't need to tell me what you think your dad feels." I was appalled by this derogatory comment the doctor said to me. I apologized for my comment, but the doctor repeatedly said I should be ashamed of myself. I was entirely disgusted by the doctor's attitude. This doctor was not at all empathetic to me and my family. This just shows me how incompetent he is regarding my father's illness. Horrible bedside manners! Is this the type of doctor that any patient would be want to go to. Not caring at all! If I was the doctor, I would have responded and said to my patient, I am sorry to hear that or I hear your frustration, let me see how I can help you. Dr. Lavin did the opposite. It took me a lot of energy to hold my composure and be professional with this doctor. Had I been unprofessional I would have yelled at this doctor and I would have told him that he should be ashamed of himself and that he's nasty and rude. He should not be a doctor at all. A poor representation of what today's doctor should be. Doctors should be compassionate and caring. We paid for medical services. We came to Dr. Lavin to seek for help. Yet, he was a complete a-hole; an old fart, with a god complex. He then tells my father about potential treatments with growth hormones. I asked the doctor if GH(growth hormones) can regenerate neurons? Dr. Lavin stated, "no, but we can try it out." He wants my father to get a series of lab work done to check his endocrine system and come back in two weeks for further evaluation and treatment. First off, if Dr. Lavin truly understands the ALS disease process, he should know there is no cure. If he was a great doctor he should empathize with our current situation and have the professional courtesy of being honest to us and not try to lead us on by wasting my father's time, money, doing unnecessary lab work, giving my father false hope, and using my father as a guinea pig to do his experimental treatment on. Dr. Lavin has never treated an ALS patient with GH in his medical career. So why treat an ALS patient now? For crying out loud, on my father's lab request work, Dr. Lavin misspelled ALS as ASL and called it Luke Garrett disease. Please tell the doctor it is called Lou Gehrig's disease. Our family knows there's not much any doctor can do for my father now, but we will never see Dr. Lavin again, nor will we ever recommend anybody we know to this so called MD. His actions truly disgraces the name of all MDs. Sent from my iPhone

outstanding endocrinologist

Dr. Lavin is outstanding in both knowledge and compassion. He really knows how to relate to patients.

When my son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, we were quite distressed. Dr. Lavin, has been absolutely wonderful. His flexibility and no nonsense attitude and child friendly bedside manner has been a blessing.

I highly recommend Dr. Norman Lavin. Knowledgeable, experienced, and professional.

Dr. Lavin is wonderful. He listens, is open to ideas, has a wealth of knowledge. His office staff on the other hand need to be retrained. They disconnect calls constantly. Do not communicate with patients properly. Are unhelpful at resolving issues. Don't follow up as asked by the doctor. Don't follow through on their promises. Often ignore people at the counter and are rude on the phone.It's too bad, because Dr. Lavin is none of the above at all.
