Dr. Ofelia Martha Ionescu, MD

Dr. Ionescu treats my family member with understanding and compassion. The combination of meds she prescribes are helping, I believe in part because she takes the time to get to know the patient. Dr. Ionescu is friendly and engaging and truly cares for her patients! My family member struggled for years with depression and anxiety. We’re all glad Dr. Ionescu is treating them!

Dr. Ionescu takes the time to listen to my mom, who has been battling depression for over 30 years. She began seeing Dr. Ionescu a few years ago. Dr. Ionescu prescribes meds that actually help my mom, and adjusts as needed. I think it’s because Dr. Ionescu takes the time to get to know the patient and their families, and understand what the patient is experiencing. My mom has seen other psychiatrists over the years, and was usually in and out quickly. Dr. Ionescu is always kind and upbeat when talking to my mom, and encourages her.

I have been a patient of Dr. Ionescu’s for over 13 years. Before meeting her, I had gone decades without relief of psychological suffering despite trying so many medications and therapies with a number of different providers. Dr. Ionescu goes above and beyond for her patients and, most importantly, she is an EXPERT at psychopharmacology. That is rare to find. She has many decades of experience in addition to her formal training and she applies that knowledge to the best care of her patients. I say this because no other prescriber was able to effectively treat me and I had been having suicidal ideations hundred of times a day for years and was absolutely miserable in so many ways. I wish she had been the first psychiatrist I had seen. It would have saved me so much pain and changed my life tremendously. She is practical, caring, and knows her stuff. I highly recommend seeing her. I know her Lawrence office is not the best in that they won’t take messages for days she is not… there, but she now has a personal assistant who will reply with you by text. Also she does phone appointments (as of summer 2021) and if you don’t feel comfortable with medical students being present for your appointment, you can ask that they not be in the room.

I developed Kidney Disease which meant that I could no longer take Antidepressants for my Depression, Bi-Polar Disease anymore. That was the worst that could happen. There are other medications that can replace them. The doctor prescribed one a day that didn't help. She refused to prescribe any more. I was in the worst depression and admitted myself to the hospital for suicidal thoughts. I continued to see the Psychiatrist I chose while in the hospital. Dr. Ionescu has her list of medications and won't go any further. The new Psychiatrist has prescribed the correct medication and enough for the day. I am much better because of his care!

The doctor was over an hour late to my appointment with her. She had two other students in my session with her which made me feel very uncomfortable during my session. She prescribed me a prescription that needed a prior authorization form filled out to my insurance and the doctor never filled it out. I called and requested that her office fill out the form and send it back to my insurance for my prescription to be filled and the doctor never filled out the form. I called numerous times and requested that she fills out the form and the doctor never filled out. As a doctor it's your responsibility to help your patient get their prescription that you prescribed them to get. This doctor doesn't care about her patient and never reached out to my insurance so I can get my prescription. Nobody at their office answers the phone and you only received text messages which is a very unprofessional way to communicate with your patients. Don't waste your time going to see this doctor.

150 E Huron office:like location,near Michigan ave.,same building with Avenue Hotel(modern New York style) .It makes me to feel comfortable before reaching the office.Very nice lobby easy to reach office .Typical psychiatric setting (no staff just buzz)but somehow a bit atypical office.Small but cozy and feminine touch.She is very courteous ,friendly and very good bed manners.I guess she likes pharmacology bc she doesn't do only patient education but enjoy talking about medication.What I really appreciate is "Availability".Dr Ionescu favorite way to communicate outside of office hours(at least at this location)is through text messages,and believe me she is available.Even when aboard.About some inconveniences....I would like to spend a little bit more time in sessions..but I guess I have to get use and deal with all these changes in health system witch sucks!!

thoughts about myself 10 years ago .I was lost,hopeless, despaired... Year by year ...month by month ,week by week,she stood by me ..anytime I needed her.No other words but thank you .What else I can say?

After three separate appointments, I can easily say that Dr Ionescu is the most unprofessional doctor I have ever had the misfortune of visiting. Long wait times are the lest of my concerns. Every time I was there, she had a medical student in the room with her, pointing out to the student personality traits/habits that classify me as having ADHD and anxiety. I wanted to change ADHD medications and explicitly told her that I don't react well to Adderall. She prescribed it for me nonetheless, with a second drug that was supposed to help balance it out. It didn't. On top of that, it took her five weeks to finally process the prescription authorization with my insurance company. It was a total nightmare. I'm sure she's a nice person, but I would never recommend anyone to see her as a patient.

Has no bedside manner... during our session she had someone I think was a trainee sitting in with us and asked very personal questions. When I got uncomfortable answering them she pointed this out to her trainee like I was Exhibit A in a lecture. She also tried to diagnose me with anxiety even though I came in to get a prescription for my ADD meds. Would not go back.
