I underwent a medically necessary breast reduction with Dr. Olga Schuth, the plastic surgeon, to relieve chronic neck and back pain. Prior to surgery, I consented to a more aggressive reduction, including a free nip graft if necessary, because pain relief and function were my priority, not cosmetic appearance. After surgery, I discovered through my records that substantially less tissue was removed than what had been discussed and pre-authorized. I was never informed that the surgical plan had changed, and I remain the same cup size with continued pain. Postoperative communication was extremely poor. My concerns regarding drains, healing, and the surgical outcome were repeatedly dismissed, and several interactions I clearly recall are either inaccurately documented or missing from the medical record entirely. My most distressing experience occurred during a follow-up appointment where I was undressed, emotional, and trying to understand why the surgery had not achieved the intended… goal. Instead of feeling heard or supported, I felt overwhelmed, dismissed, and emotionally exposed by multiple members of the surgical team. What has impacted me most is not just the physical outcome, but the loss of trust in the medical system. Patients deserve honest communication, accurate documentation, informed consent, and compassionate care, especially when undergoing surgery intended to improve quality of life. I have since sought a second opinion and continue to pursue answers regarding my ongoing pain and the need for additional surgery.
