Dr. Olumuyiwa Gay, MD

Olumyiwa may be one of the worst psychiatrists in the area, and his track record of bouncing between hospitals and institutions is concerning. He lacks any bedside manners, and as others have wrote on this forum, he does not listen to you, and will make very radical assertions or jumps in logic to diagnose you. Psychiatry is still a relatively new field of medicine, and is not perfect. I think this goes for most things but if anyone speaks to you with absolute authority on a subject, then I would be skeptical. For example, many mental health disorders are treated by certain groups of medications but the root cause of them and the exact mechanisms of why the medication works for some and not others is not well understood, and unfortunately it is the best medical solution that we have to something we do not fully understand. Olumyiwa speaks with absolute certainty about the solutions he is offering and reduces the complex neurochemical, structural, and environmental factors that go into… affecting the development of mental illness. I also believe that Olumyiwa's understanding of new developments of modern medicine is poor, as evident by his inaccurate diagnoses, outdated beliefs, and prescribing medication for something that only causes a deterioration of symptoms, he will right it off. He will also very liberally prescribe anti-psychotic medication. These are very powerful drugs that have the ability to improve people's lives, but if incorrectly diagnosed or over prescribed to people can lead to unintended consequences. I would go as far to say that, in my opinion, some of his practices are abusive. I cannot tell what the cause of them are, but I would suggest anyone to stay away from him, and to please search for other accredited individuals in the community. You are entitled to a second opinion. If you are struggling and had the unfortunate experience to encounter him, let me be the first to say that I'm sorry you had to do that. You matter, and you are not something to be labeled. Please rely on your support system and find another qualified person in the community to help you.

Wouldn't listen to me, did most of the talking, and jumped to false conclusions. Accused me of being a stimulant seeker.

The worst interaction I've had with a doctor in my life. Left feeling more in danger to myself than when I went in to CPEP due to overwhelming anxiety, fear, from a medication interaction (reacted poorly to Wellbutrin). I wanted to know what would be safe to try next, an SSRI, an SNRI, possibly an anti-anxiety medication, but he FIXATED on the fact I have taken Xanax in the past. Even me sobbing over and over "I don't want Xanax, I'm not here for Xanax" didn't register. He told me about all the illustrious hospitals he's worked at and how people are always dependent on Xanax. When I could talk over the crying and said I'd been on Celexa and Cymbalta (when I was on hormonal birth control) he said, "Well, which one do you want?" I was speechless. He was asking me to prescribe to myself? I was crying too hard to wait in the waiting room. I cried all the way home and am still crying. I wanted help. I don't want another bad reaction. I want to self harm now. I shouldn't have gone.

visited my father at crouse hospital. i waited at the door for about 15 minutes while he was impressing the nurse about how smart he was. didnt acknowledge me until he was ready to leave my father's room. I was not impressed with him or his diagnosis since he has never seen or talked to my dad ever.
