Beware. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone or use him again.I am a new patient of Dr. McDermott; it took 3 months to schedule an appointment for an exam. According to his staff, he is so thorough with new patients that extra time must be scheduled. I was not sent new patient registration, or medical history forms to fill out. By the time my appointment arrived, I was having a number of issues that needed immediate attention. The day of my appointment, due to a medical condition, I was running behind, then, I went to the wrong office building on Alta View campus so I called his office for directions, and verified that I was in the parking lot. I arrived at his office 3 minutes late for my appointment. His staff was very rude to me and said that Dr. McDermott would not see me because I was late, that he had taken the next patient already. The next appointment avail would be in 3 months. The nurse did not want to take me, because I had not preregistered, however, the… doctor agreed to see me. They called me back as I was filling out my history, so I never completed it. It seemed that I was a complete imposition and was blamed for their mistakes, for the lack of preregistration, the reminder call did not say to be early and not relaying the message that I was in the parking lot.About a third of the way into the exam, his nurse, Lisa, came into the room with a bag and said he wanted me to have this. I didnt look at the contents; I thought it was new patient package. It felt like a CD Disc. And she said I could go, he was thorough with me. I questioned her that was all because it was such an incomplete exam, and also told her I needed to complete the medical history. She verified that he didnt need me for anything else including the form. I didnt get a physical, or any of the issues that were concerning me addressed, mentioned, but not handled. I figured they were not going to be because I was 3 minutes late, and I left. When I got home, and opened to bag I discovered it contained a months supply Savella, an antidepressant, with very serious consequences. Neither Dr. McDermott nor his nurse had discussed this with me. I phoned the office the next day, and the nurse verified that I should take anything I was given and that Dr. McDermott wanted me to start it now. I insisted he call me back. I now realize this was an impossible request, since he does not ever telephone his patients. However, he did finally call me, and after my insistence that there was a serious error, said not to take it, to destroy it. I told him I had no way to dispose of such drugs and would return it to his office. He did not realize that his new patient had suddenly disappeared the day before. I was able to get him to see me again within a reasonable time to complete the exam. On the next exam, which was rushed due to him working me in, he gave me a prescription for MOBIC for pain control, with no discussion of side effects. To be a wise patient, I went to the online drug companys website for Mobic and studied the information provided on the site about side effect, which can be deadly. While this is used for arthritis pain due to the possible deadly side effects, I decided not to fill the prescription.I had other tests done that needed to be addressed immediately, and thought I could discuss the drug issue when he called to consult me on how to deal with carpal tunnel, but he did not contact me, and so I left messages for him to call me, but he did not do so. I went online to find out what to do about this condition. Four weeks later, after serious complaining to his nurse, he agreed to see me again to go over the test results and to finish the exam. I reminded the nurse that he still did not have my medical history, and agreed to come in 30 minutes early to complete it. She said the records would be ready for me to do so. They were not. This time, I insisted on finishing them before he saw me, but it made no difference, as it was not entered into my records, or consulted. I tried to find out if there was a problem with her and also to provide confirmation of time I had arrived on the first visit.Dr. McDermott was upset with me and was cold and aloof when I got into the exam room due to a conversation I had with this nurse in the waiting room, over whether there was an issue between us that needed resolving. In the exam room, his first words were that he could not continue to see me, if I treated his staff so badly, so I discussed this in detail with him, but not to his satisfaction. He did finally go over my medical tests and make needed referrals for my treatment. At the end, I told him that had not filled the Mobic RX, it was one of the issues I wanted to discuss on the phone. I was shocked when he got extremely angry, and said there was not reason for him to see me, if I would not follow his advice. I tried to discuss my research, and concerns with him, he put it off as invalid and alarmist, and that I should trust his 30 years of experience, and should just do what he said. He took as a personal attach on his ability as a doctor, was very defensive, and kept pushing this medication on me. I told him I wanted him to discuss with me any medication given, and bottom line, I have the right to decide what I put in my body, and I was just telling him so he could note it in my medical file. Since, he was so stressed out by this I refrained from reminding him that he had already sent me home with the wrong medications once. This was not awful ending to an already bad experience with Dr. McDermott. I didnt tell him, that the insurance company had already filled a report because of the treatment, mistreatment, lack of treatment and advised me to change doctors. They advised me not to return for this visit.
